Well just got a call from Vic Brinkman this morning. The famous GRASS SHACK burned down last night. From the details it started upstairs in the apartment Missy rents out. Hopefully by the Nationals she will have it back up and running. This favorite watering hole was the boat racers hang out, kind of like the Falon is to Lochhaven. If you wanted to hear how much speed your competitors picked up, this is were you went to find out how they did it. This was also a place were old boat racers came out of the wood work to visit. In some cases we rekindled the fire and got them back into the sport. I remember one night seeing Vic drive his moped right into the bar and buy a round for the Wild Ones race team. Anyway Grass Lake has another watering hole just down the road. The Village Inn will be able to handle our group in fine fashion. And I am sure the street fair will go down with or without the Grass Shack hangout. Say your prayers it will be up and running by Nationals!!!! Mikey

Not So FAST!
Despite a charred upper floor, a hole in the roof, and standing water and smoke damage below, the owner of a Grass Lake bar vows a quick turn-around.
"I want to be open by Memorial Day," Missy Shelhart said Friday morning as friends offered to help clean and restore Missy's Little Grass Shack.
The popular bar caught fire about 12:30 a.m. Friday just as the bartender announced last call to a few patrons. Mike "Spider" Boyle, who lives above the bar, was treated at Allegiance Health for second-degree burns on his arms, Shelhart said.
"Thank God everyone got out," she said.
The bartender ran to her house nearby and banged on her door. Flames shot from the upper floor when Shelhart and her boyfriend, Dan Ducharme, arrived.
The roof of the Movie Shoppe, a business next door to the Grass Shack, also suffered some damage.
The 19th-century brick building at S. Lake Street and E. Michigan Avenue burned at least once before, in 1982. That fire was on the main floor where the bar is located.
The Jackson County Fire Investigation Team was on the scene today and had not determined the cause of the fire.
Shelhart said the business was insured and she will begin to rebuild as soon as an insurance adjuster gives the go-ahead.
"We were supposed to go to Myrtle Beach in South Carolina next week, but I'm going to stay home and deal with my own fire," Shelhart said. "I don't have children. This is my baby."
