    I am not sure about the kit numbers but normally what you get is a new pack and coil combo and a new trigger assembly. what you don't get is the distributor shaft, cap and plug wires.

      That is correct on what you get and the part number is right also. 114-2986K1.

        CDI Kits - More info

        Steve,
        The info thus far is correct. Basically you need a 4-cyl distributor, but you can "upgrade" one with the CDI/Rapair kit that has bad wires coming out of the trigger housing. You get the entire housing, switchbox with integrated coil, shaft bearings and a new trigger disc. MAKE SURE you get the trigger disc on correctly - usually labeled "This Side Up". Its a bit tricky getting this all assembled without messing up the trigger disc, but be patient and pay attention when you disassemble the old unit.
        FYI, the CDI kit has a magnetic pickup (Hall effect), so you have to use their trigger disc (steel) and NOT the Mercury copper disc. I believe the Mercury pickup is an optical trigger mechanism - not positive. The Mercury disc needs to be on correctly also, as it is usually marked (UP). I find that the CDI switchbox uses less battery current at RPM and doesn't degrade with time. The CDI switchbox can not be used with the Mercury coil. There are slight differences in the rotor for the 6 vs 4 cyl. distributors. The 6cyl. is about 1/2" longer and the alignment slot for the trigger disc is positioned slightly different. Be careful if you are building one from parts.

          More thoughts + Pictures

          If you just want to swap out the Mag for a CDI/distributor system, then you just need a 4-cyl distributor from a Merc650 or 850 and the CDI/Rapair switchbox, which is the same part number without the K1. Lot less money. You don't use the Merc coil with the CDI box, as it's integrated with the switchbox.
          The CDI switchbox system can be tested just like the Mercury system per the attached diagram. Make sure everything is grounded together including the distributor base.
