What I would do is buy a set (or two) of the two ring pistons from Dave Scott. (I'm not just talking either.... I bought two sets from him.)

You've been around long enough that I know that you know that you don't need 3 rings per piston for a race motor.

last i knew the newer " 2 ring piston rings" were keystone rings and have a slant or angle on 1 side and will not work in the older style 3 ring piston originally supplied from mercury , at least i believe they wont ( that is my belief any way)
as for needing the 3rd ring i usually just use an older worn or standard in the bottom groove
to provide heat transfer or removal but not create drag well as little as possible

any 1 else use these rings on the older style 3 ring mercury pistons ?

      thanks

          More sources

Randy, try Hastings Piston Rings. They even have rings for the 40's as well as 44's (according to their website). I have also been buying the old style rings from NAPA. They have a variety of outboard parts in their Marine catalogue. Keep digging buddy, mike 67G.
