      D gear pin

      Nick,

I drill the 3/16" hole all the way through the shaft and the gear so that you have a double shear pin instead of the original style. In my opinion, the Mercury pin is too small and allows the gear to shift. I simply use an aircraft hardenend AN clevis pin cut to length.

Of course the gear and shaft are hard so you need to use a carbide drill and ideally do it on a mill that you can slow WAY down and flood with coolant.

I think you’re right… your wife was pretty surprised to see that I was born without a left leg… (but yet, that pant leg always seems to be filled… hmmmm… I wonder how this could be?)

                A SOurce For Pinning

I have a source for pinning the gears in Battle Creek if you are interested. If interrested get hold of me and I can see what he would charge. We have most of our Mod stuff pinned by him. He has a laser tool that cuts a perfect tapered hole through the gear and shaft all at once, under a water like soultion. He then presses a pin into it. He does great work in my opinion.

I make the pins from a drill

I have been using the correct diameter drill to make pins. I use a cut off wheel and can usely get 4 from a single drill.
