when building a fuel pump on a 44 how do the gaskets go soft rubber then back plate the hard gasket then blot to the block need help here

    Fuel pump 101

As you can see, the fuel pump is in two halves. Make a sandwich with the rubber pump diaphragm as the "meat" and the two thin cork gaskets as the "bread". Insert the little sandwich between the pump halves taking care that the screw holes line up properly. It helps to thread the screws into the pump halves to hold this all together so the pieces don't slip when you assemble this to the block. Now put the thick black gasket on the back of the whole assembly and carefully start threading the screws into the block. When the screws are completely seated tighten them evenly. After a bit, go back and re-tighten them because the baskets will squish a little and the pump will leak if you don't. Remember not to lean too hard on these screws because you don't want to strip these holes out.

        No Rtv!

You don't want to put any sealer whatsoever on these gaskets. What you need is to get a new rebuild kit for your pump that will have all the proper pieces included. I have gotten them from NAPA. The part number is 18-7804 in the NAPA Marine products catalogue.

do not use any RTV sealer on any part of the fuel system!!! That stuff will create problems in the small fuel passageways!! Spend $6 or so and buy the correct fuel pump kit with all the right parts!! Merc p/n 23014A1
