  • What is the Right Motor: Class D Furnal

    I will be restoring a class D Furnal Flyer, and I would like to know what would be the best old engine for it. I have no experience driving, but want to buy the last motor first. Will not be racing, just trying to have fun.

    Mark 30H or Mark 55H?
    Would 55H be too much?
    What about Mark 40H?

      Not sure of the history, except some farmer raced it a while. Liked John Deere. Can't remember where he farmed. That is not the original color.

      Bought it in Dartmouth, MA about a year ago. Needs some deck work, which I want to get after as it warms up. I will also probably restore the transom height, once I find the motor I want.

      It came with a Mark25, and I would like to get that on a different boat.

      That Mark 55H would be nice.

      Will respond when I get more history. Anybody looking to give a Mark 55H a good home?

        How big is the boat. I remember seeing it on e-bay and did not believe it was a D boat.

        I was thinking it was either a C or 20ssh.

          A local Carolina Peanut farmer Hagatha owned it and raced it a few years before going Inboard. We nicknamed him John Deere (original ha). He stayed in the southern end of the region but was always at Camden, NC racing.

                measure the bottom width. (distance between the airtraps) should be like 34", 35", 36".

                measure the afterplane length. (distance from the flat spot behind the back of the sponson usually where the turn fin attaches, to the he furthest point straight back on the bottom). should be like 75" to 82".

                with this information i'm sure you will get a lot of advice here. if you just want to have fun there is nothing wrong with those motors you have just mentioned. if you want to race (once in a while) with a local club they won't be competitive. a modern competitive motor will cost you the same money maybe even less.

                I would suggest getting in touch with a local club in your area and just watch and listen a little before buying something you might wish you would have not later on. it's super cool to see your enthusiasm. welcome...

                  If you are going to choose between a 30H and 55H go with the 55. A lot more bang for the buck and they weigh almost exactly the same. The 30" 30H is kinda anemic with limited amount of torque. A 55H with a 44" power head will haul the mail real well for a lake racer.

                    after thinking about my last post I thought I would give you more food for thought.

                    if your boat is a "C" or a CMOD size boat a used yamato 302 would be a more competitive less expensive option than a 30h. 1200 to 1500 bucks will get you a used 302 all day long. usually with a prop or 2. Nice 30h motors are cool for sure but they are mostly in the hands of collectors these days and 2500 to 3500 is what they sell for.

                    if your boat is a 'D" hydro "as you think it is" a used mercury 44xs would be a more competitive less expensive option than a 55h. i had a 44xs for sale last month for 2500 bucks. again a 55h is as cool as they come but not as competitive as the 44 and collectors or those with nice ones usually don't let them go for less than 3000 to 3500.

                    i'm just trying to clarify my previous post. if you are looking to put a classic package together for fun than more power to you. i'd love to have an old 55h. if just going for a ride once in a while is what you are trying to do consider a motor that will have you in the hunt at a local race for less $$$...

                    keep me posted. love seeing pictures. that is a sweet boat to start a project with.

                      The airtrap is 36" wide.

                      The afterplane is 70"

                      Transom to sponson tip is 10' 4"

                      What do I have?

                      Appreciate the comments; I do see the classics are pricey. Will keep my eyes open.

                      Will probably go to to the AOMCI West Ohio Meet in Dayton on 3/23/13

                        C's are usually right about 10' Ive seen a Furnal 'D' that seemed pretty small tho. They are known to be fast. On that I'd ask what are you looking for speed-wise. Some of the previous D suggestions could get you into the mid 80's. [if it is a D] At that point there's some stuff you need to know. Boat wakes can be bad news at speed, no room for error there. Safety equipment & all that are wise.
                        If you want to go all out like that then you 'just might be' race material.
                        Think about it, you can go like mad!, it's legal, there's rescue & EMT on site. Its a party & you'll never learn to drive like you will when your on someones tail.. or someones on yours.
                        On the other hand if you want to enjoy the boat & not race a motor of the next class down will still be pretty fast & alot more non closed course, boat wake friendly. Your boat has shown up before, I remember seeing it on line. Good Luck, Go to the races & keep us up to date. Mike

                            Safety issues are not lost on me. Slow and steady for me. I am trying to get a feel for how fast I want to go.

                            Being in the structured enviroment may be a good idea.

                              70" afterplane....way to short for anything over a C stock.....perfect for a Yamato 80 though...20ssh
