Iv been dreaming about a full size hydro. Not a o.b. , but a true prop riding inboard oval hydro for fun. Thought I might lurk around here a bit and see if anyones tinkered with things im interested in..

Robin is great, very friendly, and knows where equipment is available for sale all across the country.

Most Inboard Hydroplane Racing is either East Coast or West Coast based. The nearest race to you is Detroit, MI.

If your up for a road trip, ask Robin when the next Driving School is. Great way to get exposed to all the classes and drive before you buy. They give you formal driving instruction, provide the safety gear, divers, lots of different boats to drive, an APBA membership, and it is just plain fun.

Id look for a 1 liter if I lived closer to the action. Detriot is a heck of a road trip which I cant do. Since I would be running alone and for fun, it opens up a new run what you brung window. Vintage, or a rat hydro.

Has anyone made a outboard hydro run like a inboard? Meaning not a tail dragger? A rear shoe or two? Or is trapping the air at the transom the key to outboard speed?

The more boat you get out of the water the faster you go.

"Tail draggers" are slower than full air trap hydroplanes with the same horsepower.

Drag boats rely on large horsepower to go very fast for a short period of time in a straight line.

If your not interested in racing but still want the social aspects of the sport combined with high performance boating try a Poker Run.

Poker Runs are hugely popular and the major groups that sponsor them provide divers and safety and rescue crews.

If you just have a need for speed the sensation of speed at 65+ MPH in a made-for-racing outboard hydroplane 4 inches off the water such as a C Stock Hydro is greater than a motorcycle at 100MPH or a car at 130MPH.

Bonus: Stock Outboard is cheaper and there are races very near you to compare your skills against others. Not to mention some of the best people you ever met.

One of the NBRA guys should jump in here any second as your in their backyard.

Can you give me a example of a taildragger (I assume you mean a ob hydro) with the same hp of full air trap hydroplane?

To me the ob hydros may look like a hydro but run like a flat bottom.

Yes, in the late 1950's and early 1960's Entrop, McDonald and Jones made full propriding outboards. For a few years they ruled over the F and X classes ... until the taildragging Sidcraft design was extended to those classes.

I think the full propriding outboards had higher top speed, but the taildragging type boats accelerated and turned better and the propriding design faded into the history books for closed course racing.

In still pictures it may appear that taildragging 3 point outboards are running the same as any other flat bottom, but it is far from reality - they truly are floating on air even if the back of the bottom is touching.
