  • Classics at Top"O 2009

The Classics returned to Top'O in 2009. Although the turn out was small with only four boats the thrill of seeing the howlers and the KG's roar up the Indian River gave everyone goose bumps. The 20H conversions could be heard up river long after they passed us on the start line and I am sure some residents wondered what on earth all the noise was about. Mike Marshal and the gang did a great job of representing the addition of this class to this race. The winner got a great looking plaque for his efforts. If you have a classic gathering dust in the barn dust that sucker off and get her ready for next years classics running ant Indian River.

Thanks to all of the Race Committee for another fine Top'O race. Adding the Classics to the racing program was great. For those of you a bit too timid to go out first time for a full marathon this is the race for you. I ran my old 20H on my Rinker. This is NOT a marathon boat ! The Classics ran a 12-13 mile course that went about 1.5 miles up Mullet Lake. We had our share of rough water but the crowd and smooth water in the Indian River was worth it. My 20H used just under 1 gallon. My grandson ran a Racecraft (arguably, it isn't a marathon boat either) with a nice KG-4. I finished in 19:42 and his time was about 24 minutes. He still had about a pint left in his top mounted tank. So, you can see that you don't need special equipment. I must have had 50 spectators come up to me to tell me stories about the old boat and motor they still have hanging in the garage or basement. Many of them are potential racers in the 2010 Top'O Michigan Classic Race.
