Hartford Becomes Newest ChampBoat Host City
Rinker’s All-time Win Streak Moves To New England
CHARLOTTE, North Carolina – September 14, 2006 – The ChampBoat Grand Prix Series takes its exciting racing action to the shores of the Connecticut River in downtown Hartford, Connecticut for a pair of historic events for the weekend of September 23rd and 24th marking the first time that powerboat racing has come to this lovely New England state.
When the roar of engines start for the first time on the Connecticut River all eyes will be on Rinker Boats/Amsoil sponsored driver Terry Rinker as he chases the all-time win streak held in the sport set by Italian Guido Cappellini of Como, Italy. The 9-time World Champion secured his six straight wins during the 1996 U.I.M. F1 World Championship season. Cappellini’s victory run was ended by Welshman Jonathan Jones at oddly enough, his hometown race in Campione d’ Italia, on Lake Lugano. Terry, meanwhile will be hoping his streak rolls on during the penultimate race of the 2006 season.
“We are set to tackle the new venue in Hartford,” stated the Tampa, Florida resident. “We have been focused on bringing back the championship and have a lot of testing. This is important for me since it would be the first time for back to back championships. I think this event is a perfect place to help solidify our chances to do just that and my crew deserves this accomplishment as much as I do.”
With Rinker earning 2942 points thus far this season with his 5 straight victories, veteran and four-time champion Tim Seebold of the Bud Light Racing Team sits in 2nd place and needs plenty of luck and a pair of wins to have any hope in gathering his 5th title. The native of St. Louis, Missouri sits 329 points back and is trying to shake a winning draught that goes back to St. Louis of last year 8 races ago as he goes for his 20th career victory.
“We know we are behind the eight ball and have to have a perfect rest of the season,” stated Tim. “We still have a chance and if there is an opportunity we are sure going to take full advantage of the situation. We are ready to win and would love to take the first victory at the new race site in Hartford.”
Third in the Champboat Grand Prix Series is Lynn Simburger in the Famous Craft Racing entry who is working on his first podium of the season along with four top-5 finishes thus far this year. The Elsah, Illinois driver had his string of top-5 finishes in the championship stopped last season missing a race in Colorado after going five straight years with consistent steady performances.
Louisiana driver Brian Normand has been the talk of the season as this rookie of the year candidate is fourth in the championship after coming into the sport from offshore racing. His best effort this season was a spirited 2nd place at the Greater Cincinnati Grand Prix and is coming off a 4th at the last round at the Great Chicagoland Grand Prix at Kankakee, Illinois.
Chris Fairchild leads a strong Hooters sponsored effort and is 5th this year as he continues to play boat tag with a pair of boats that continue to be tweaked. His 2003 hull built by Gary Pugh of Tennessee seems to be running better on some courses while his newly designed ’06 version is better on others. The struggle to secure the “right mix” has held him back as he is always a choice to be a possible winning driver at any ChampBoat event. He has two satisfying efforts this season, a 2nd in Minneapolis and a fine 2nd in his home state two weeks ago.
New York driver Wyatt Nelson brings his Italian DAC boat to Hartford for his “home race” while sitting 6th in the championship. He has struggled with non finishes this season and has a podium with a third place finish at the season opener at Bay City, Michigan back in June. The architect from Syracuse will be hopefully using this event as a platform for his first ever victory in the ChampBoat series.
One of the series most exciting drivers Shaun Torrente of the Gary L. Barton Corporation sponsored California Gold Racing Team brings his talent in hopes of his first victory and podium to the Connecticut River. Despite his speed, Shaun has been snake bit this year leading by comfortable margins at Greater Cincinnati and the Chicagoland races only to failing to finish. The Miami, Florida driver hopes this weekend could bring another trip to the top step of the podium and his first race victory of the season for the “East-West Xpress”.
Canadian driver Brian Venton makes his short trip to Hartford from Ontario looking for his first ever podium finish coming off his career best 6th place finish two weeks ago. This last year’s rookie of the year runner-up has 4 previous top-10 finishes and is hoping this event could be his break through race into the top-5 for the first time in his career.
A driver who has had a steady season and is hoping to reach the podium for the first time in his career is Randy Rinker, brother and teammate of point’s leader Terry Rinker. The Indiana driver comes from many years of racing the lesser Formula 2 series and is becoming a quick learner in the class while hoping to reach the heights that his younger brother has attained.
The 1st Grand Prix event in the history of Hartford, Connecticut will be a showplace for the start of fall foliage in New England and with the scenic background of downtown it should be one of the most memorable events on the 2006 calendar.
If anyone hopes in stopping the victory train that Terry Rinker has put together this season, they are going to have to out duel this very professional effort that has proved to be unstoppable this season. Maybe New England will be the magic formula for success for another driver to attain this goal. We only have a week and one-half to find out for this September 23-24 possible record breaking day.
