F1 Boats Hit 125 mph in Bay City Practice
Bay City, Mich. (June 25) – Tim Seebold of Osage Beach, Mo., the points leader on the 2010 Formula One PROP Tour, averaged 125.804 m.p.h. in a practice lap Friday for this weekend’s 23rd Dow Bay City River Roar on the Saginaw River. Shaun Torrente of Homestead, Fla., currently second in the points standings, also turned laps in the 124-to-125-m.p.h. range.
The Formula One boats are racing on a 1.25-mile course on the Saginaw River, which was unusually smooth Friday as just a handful of boats at a time turned testing laps to fine-tune setups and select propellers for time trials and heat races that will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday. Those events will determine the starting order for Sunday’s 50-lap championship race.
Dan Orchard of Ontario, Canada, the points leader in the PROP Formula Two class, averaged 110.213 mph on one of his practice laps Friday on the same 1.25-mile course.
PROP Formula Lights class leader Jose Mendana Jr. of Miami was the only driver to crash in practice, barrel-rolling his boat in the second turn during the morning sessions. He was not hurt, but his crew was still making repairs to his engine during the afternoon sessions. Former national champion Bud Nollman of Osage Beach, Mo., was timed at 71.839 m.p.h. during his afternoon practice session. The Formula Lights boats are racing on a course of about 0.75-mile.
