  • Boat racers ok after weekend wrecks

    PORT ARTHUR —

Two tunnel boat racers who wrecked this weekend at the 2009 Riverfest Thunder on the Neches are both in good condition and recovering, according to Forest Barber, race chairman and pit coordinator.

Racer David Bradham had to be rescued Sunday after his Formula One boat came to rest upside down after what fellow racer Wayne Barber called a “bad blow over.” The rescue crew brought Bradham above water in 30 seconds. In the process, he took in some water.

Forest Barber said Bradham is talking and “looking good.”

The Formula One Champboat of the other racer, Tim Seebold, erupted and exploded on earlier on Sunday. A plume of smoke arose from where Seebold’s boat came to rest.

Forest Barber said Seebold is fine physically, only mourning the loss of his $40,000 boat engine. The St. Louis, Mo., resident has already left for home.

Announcer Mike Tilton said he never seen anything as what happened to Seebold.

“Flames are shooting up from both sides of his motor — it looks like a grenade went off,” Tilton said.

Seebold’s boat was towed in by rescue crews. He waved to the crowd while hitching a ride on their boat.
