  • THE INCREDIBLE REVIVAL-REUNION of Hall of Famers!

Burley 2009 saw four Champion flat drivers reunited! Their first time together in decades and they all participated in an impromt 'last man out formation' as a tribute to Lance and Bill Sr. Faulkner, who also were Champions and originators of the event.

    Names

From the left: Paul Grichar (Gritch) who has driven everything, his last victory was the Burley Mink with his GN305 endurance boat.

Win Phillips from Montana raced the incredible Hemi powered 'Wild Hare' Lavey Craft to untold victories.

Our own George Nordling who's last APBA Championship was in the K200 supercharged Beisemeyer in 1988. He came away from Winston West stock cars to run Outlaw Flats with us and won overall in 2003.

And Bill Faulkner Jr. drove his Dads SS701 Hot R Canary now owned by George.

That was the cool part, they each drove vintage Lavey Crafts, some for the first time in 20 years and roared around the famous Burley Island paying tribute to their lost friends and fellow racers. Too cool. The officials had a difficult time in honoring this request for safety reasons but the veterans proved them all wrong as they cruised in front of the huge crowd in perfect formation and timing. However, once behind the Island, one could hear all four engines roar to life due to WOT! Here are the boats, some you will recognize:

      Final member Bill Faulkner Jr.

driving his Dads boat having been in storage for 25 years and now restored by George and Mike. He stated to George that when ever or where ever he tests this boat, he would like to drive......maybe we should fly him to Moses Lake!

        Of real interest

Here is the Black and candy striped 'Sweet Caroline' now owned by Muffler Mark that still, to this day holds Mr Nordling's Pro Comp record of 104 average. However this shot was George driving the Lady and winning Burley sometime in the 80s and then painted pearl white and a different number. That number still resides on the trailer under the #50 currently running Nostalgia Flat with SLORA.
Some ask why he didnt buy her back when it was for sale in Oregon just a few miles from his Millwaukee home instead of his other three? Now, he might say, I goofed. Rumor has it, he is trying to acquire another.....

Incidently, This craft was Georges' third Lavey replacing the burned 'Your Taxes Too'. 'Your Taxes (1)' was last seen at Banks Lake Regatta this year when a Canadian came down to view our races. I personally think they were a well built boat to have now been racing and cruising for 39 years!

Thanks George for all you do to make our bunch safe and your constant assistance to anyone in trouble. Now if anyone has a super stock motor to loan him, he can fix one of his two broken ones. Whoops He has been trying to run all three boats for the last 3 years!

          Another Faulkner boat

The other SK70, sister to SS701 that set records, many of them. No one knows what ever happened to this Lavey with a trunk. SK class was limited to under 400 cubes but many modifications were allowed. It started out similar to our own ski boat class of today, then like many other APBA classes, were driven to extinction like the E flats.

            New Hall of Fame recipient

One of George Nordlings drivers: Mr. Mike Todd driver of E66R and SS701 and SK class winner and NSS class! Now we will see if the little white boat with the little motor can be put back together! Thanks also goes to George Nordling, runner up for the Pitman of the Year award.

              to the top

this just had to go up to the top, Burley, if ya miss it again, it may not be there when you are ready! Nostalgia is more than welcome and I urge anyone with the means and the slightest desire to come down and be treated like bonifide racers even with OLD boats. This happens on a Golf Course, so bring your family for a vacation and your golf clubs!!! There is camping right on the driving range!!!
