  • Happy Birthday Scotty Copher! - Ione, WA Nostalgia Flatbottoms

Our friend Scotty Copher celebrated his birthday at the SLORA/AOF race in Ione Washington this weekend and received a special treat from boat owners Steve and Jenny Chamberlain. Scotty raced outboard hydro's about 38 years ago and had a couple of great pictures he shared with me from back then. He raced with people like Bill Muncey and Chip Hanauer.

Scotty is a tireless soul who works at that races helping coordinate the running of the Nostalgia Flatbottoms (boat I personally love to watch run).

I wanted to share his birthday gift. There will be more pictures posted later of Scotty racing this boat.

Scotty qualified for his first APBA hydro race at the tender age of 16, 38 years ago! I believe in 145 inboard hydro (could be wrong on the class) and he celebrated 38 years of continued boat racing with his run in his first competition flat. I personally think he drove exceptionally well in the #72 Hondo Drag boat that is NOT supposed to turn! Like many other Outlaw flat owners, we have adapted and modified these thriple decade old craft. This borrowed boat is a 1972 semi-runner bottom one with a vintage 427 Chevrolet. Of course only the lucky ones can find competitive circle flats since there are very few survivors at a price we all can afford so we use what we can find! Ski boats and drag boats abound and can be purchased for under $5000 turn key. A competitive Beisemeyer or Jones hull could fetch twice that.
