  • 44XS Impeller Installation

I removed the old impeller and key on my 44xs lower unit. No problem. Now, how do I get the key back in on the flat spot of the shaft and lined back up with the slot inside the impeller? All the while turning the impeller to get the vanes to bend and get into the hole....... What is the 'trick'.?

I "stick" the key to the flat spot with some heavy grease. I also mark the drive shaft where the key is with a Sharpie. Then I position the impeller a little ahead of where it will wind up. I turn the impeller to get the vanes starting into the cup. Stop when the vanes are starting to in while you have the groove in impeller lined up with your mark and then just push it down. With some practice it becomes fairly easy. Some guys use a zip tie to get the vanes partially compressed and then slide it in like you would with a piston and ring compressor but I haven't had much luck with that method. With the method I use it sometimes takes a couple of tries.
