  • 4D-1 Mag/Throttle Connection

I am trying to figure out how the mag/throttle hookup works on a 4D-1 Mag style hookup. I believe I have all the pieces to do this, I just am not sure how this works.

The motor is actually a 44ci Merc 400 that is being mounted on a D quicksilver. Here is a pic what I am working with. The tower and foot have been restored and the powerhead has been rebuilt, the rest is a work in progress until I get it figured out and running, then I will finish the restoration.

Attached are 2 pictures of what I am working with so far. I am not sure what I need to do from here to get the mag and throttle working together with the 55H/30H control parts that will mount to the lower cowling pan. If there is a work around that would be better based on what I have already, please share your thoughts and pictures.

Any advice and or detailed pictures would be greatly appreciated.

I do not see the triangular actuating bracket in your pictures. It is wrapped plate that connects from the lever in the pan to bracket on the top of the mag that has a finger and press on the actuating lever on the carb connecting shaft.

      Mag / throttle hookup

Doug, what Alan is describing is the 55H setup that uses a longer mag drive and curved stamped plate to link to a lever in the lower pan... what you have here with the shaft and 'spring' mag drive isn't the usual setup. Drop me a note, I'll get you some pix of my 55H...

That 55H setup uses the brass t-slot connector to the cable, and actuates the carbs off a bronze 'spoon' on the carb shaft to the 'finger' on the mag drive.

Parts are easy to come by, or make.

Do I recognize some of those parts?

        Throttle setup

If your doing a correct 55-H build I believe you have the wrong magneto hanger. If required I can scan the Mercury parts manual sections and post the. The photo shows all the parts that make up a throttle hookup except the 55-H bottom pan.

I think the mag hanger is the issue and is where I am getting jammed up. Alan, it does not have to be a correct 55H setup since it is not a 55H, I just need to make this motor work with a full cowling, top/bottom and wrap.

Here are the parts I have for the mag and lower cowl. I am trying to figure out with the spring setup as Jerry indicated I have, if I can make this work or if I need to look for a new mag hanger.

I am at a loss on where to go from here. If I connect the spark advancer part to the mag, I can see where it will only advance until the mag hits the stop. From there, the advance must come from the linkage at the top of the mag.

              Throttle / Mag Linkage

Fortunately, you have the critical hard to find pieces, including the Merc Mag Actuator plate and the cable hook up parts...

Yes, you need a different Mag Adapter/ Drive. The one Alan shows in his Pix is a MK30 one, as the MK55 version doesn't have the vertical rib. Either works. Be sure you find one with a good bearing and all the brass or steel tabs are there... All things equal, I prefer the steel version.

Thanks Alan, for posting the parts book pages. I was just about to scan those for Doug.

Doug, I'll send you some pix, including a home made timing stop. Feel free to copy it.

There is a thread on johnsoldmercurysite.com that deals with this issue. A guy on that site reproduced a few of those parts and may make some more if there are enough orders. The thread is titled something like 30H Throttle Parts or 55H Throttle Parts or something like that. A search should turn it up. There are some good pictures included. The parts are very well made.
