    Looper

What part of Looper do you people not understand. The 44 Merc. is a 1950's design cross flow with 50'e reeds . The Tothatsu is one of the latest design motors at 42 cu. the merc at 43 so with just a little work they could beat the merc. This is what will happen if they let the Toc. in D Mod the first year they will get beat by the Merc . The next year the Toc drivers will cry we need the same rules that the Merc. has so it is fair . When they mod. the Toc Looper the Merc. is dead so all you have done is kill the best class in boat racing . I have seen it all from when i watched my dad race at 3 years old in 1949.

      Wtf????

why does the Tohatsu vs. Merc debate always come up anytime a 44 is mentioned or talked about. Jesus frikkin christ people, get over it!!! Those who want to keep running the old Merc 44 do so, it is their choice.............those who want to run a new Tohatsu, then so be it, it again is their choice...........competition is great for racing...............I dont give a crap which motor you choose........build it, let's go racing...........

BTW, I have built more Mercs than most people here and have seen it all, besides being a 22yr Merc certified tech also.........I have chose to run the Tohatsu, but have no issues with others (including my teammate and friends) that run the Merc 44.............and gladly help them keep their Mercs running......

      squash the bull**** people............

PS: I also have (2) Merc 44mods........and atleast a half dozen other 44's......

Have you raced that thing? Sure looks good, late style gearfoot and all. Seeing the date on the above post, I thought I'd just inquire as to how things went.

They are junk to people who do not know how to fix and use them ... Mags provide more than enough spark for modded 44's

I know people out there will disagree an say they are good. Ive ran mags for 20 years or so.They are OK but they are not as good as a CDI Ign.Now way no how are they better. Look at the people. who are wining in dmod today an i bet they are running a cdi most of them anyway. It takes a good mag to spin about 6000 rpms to put out the same spark as a cdi puts out on an idle.So how is that better.

                    No doubt about it

Today's solid state ignitions are the way to fly. And the spark they produce can't be argued with. But, I would like you to direct me to a totally bolt-on ignition system for the 40/44 merc that is made today. STOP! I said... BOLT ON! In other words, in the order blank which I fill out, it says something like this: "Specify Application" ... ie: 48 valve Ferrarri Formula One, Honda 500cc V4, etc etc, 40/44 Merc, etc. Get my drift? Who makes a BOLT ON ignition system for this pelican? Cheap!! Do Not tell me to use a Brunswick Bowling Ball Company ignition system du-jour... please!!!!

Now, take me to the average D-Mod racers garage. He/she just wants to slap the ignition system on there, time it, and press on with other chores. So... what do you reach for? A freaking MAGNETO.., THAT's what!! And you grab one that someone who knows WTF they are doing who has set it up and has delivered to you, along with a spare. No stator problems, No ignition pack anomalies, no crap you can't figure out for yourself. Just a MAGNETO that will jump your azz into the next county if you're stupid. Aircraft still use them.

                    Now.. let's go racing.

Just a minor addition: aircraft with mags use two of them in case one fails. Still, aircraft mags are simple and VERY reliable, its rare when even one fails.

Twin mags on aircraft engines increases power. Pilots check their mags by switching them off one at a time. RPM's drop substantially when one is switched off. Top fuel cars run them too.

                            Questions:

                            1. When did Mercury stop making new engines equipped with magnetos?

                            2. Why did they (Mercury) stop using them?

I would bet the main reason was the lack of reliability from the breaker points, not the magneto itself.

Brunswick Corp is what comes to my mind.
