We raced APBA since 1975, sold all our stuff after a bad boat crash in 87, my Brother almost lost his leg when a boat flipped and came ontop of him prop first, after 140 stitches and recovery we kind of lost interest, but we all have the bug again!
Those are stock carbs that came on the motor...same ones you would find on the 44XS engines.
Those are an earlier version of the WMA type carb, 1986 or earlier, where the fuel pumps are in each carb under the blue covers. The 44XS version eliminated the pump plate in each carb and used the large square Mercury remote pump mounted on the case cover to supply both carbs.
BTW, that square pump is double acting with direct bolt up for one pulse source and a hose and fittings for the other. Most 44's run just the direct bolt up source, and plug the hose connections...
Sorry to hear about your brothers accident. I hope that he has made a full recovery. Great to see that you guys are back into it. I'm sure that you will enjoy being back on the race coarse and receive all the help you need with your "D" mod. Cheers
Of all the things I've lost I miss my mind the most.
All I can say is, if there were as many dead Tohatsu's layin around as there are dead 44 mercs we'd really be having a party. But, in the mean-time..... accent on 'mean and lean times'... the Tohatsu converts are occurring.... one motor at a time. So better get ready to bring yer lunch pilgrims.

To answer the question of why a mag versus a CDI-you don't need a flywheel or stator-less spinning wheight-less horse power to run the ignition-Jerry may have a better answer but if you can run a mag they make great spark and are very reliable.
John, Are you locking the mag down or leaving it adjustable? The mag really gives the "D" mod that classic look. I really like the kd mags. I haven't had the best luck with them. When they worked they worked really good, but I had to have three ready to go at all times. There is a guy on here named Steve Roslowski who makes what some would consider a next generation racing ignition for the mercs. I am saving my pennies for one right now. Steve is a great guy and the quality of the parts is extraordinary. If you should decide to upgrade at any time you might consider one.

I have to agree with Sonny that Steves system is simple, no points, all electronic and no big honking flywheel.. A guy we race with has one and it works great..Only thing is it like a few more rpms to start so they give a extra wrap of the rope and away she goes..Electric start would be perfect for this aplication..
mmm as for flywheel weight i have a stock 11lbs flywheel on my fe-rude turn it 8500 rpm,,,,,no worries.... mmmm it cool if your mags are reliable but i bet ya 100 people would argue with ya on that point,,,,,but congrats it dose looke great,,, i bet we all would like to know more about the humps on the back of the cylinders,,,???
The project looks like you are having fun, which is great news.
For ignition, you have a lot of options. I have seen Steve's ignition run. Not a bad system. If you don't have the coin, the mags work just fine. Set them up right, and some preventitive maintainence and they can go all season.
Merc made a CDI that does not require a big flywheel... it is a great system. Larry Macafee made some gaskets to solve the water issue, since then it is pretty solid. And fairly cheap as you can find them in junkyards. But you do need to be somewhat mechanical to hook them up, it is a nightmare with all the wiring being exactly right. You can still buy brainboxes new for the system as well.
No, I don't have the part numbers, as I am at work.
The trouble most guys have with mags is that they dont know anything about them!, the main thing is to keep them clean, these things throw a hell of a spark compared to the cdi system, thus the name THUNDERBOLT!!!
