Where to start?

Hey all,

I'm looking to get into inboard racing. Where do you start? I have done sooo much reading and seen a lot of boats for sale with a price range which is from one end of the spectrum to the other. I was originally looking at getting into the 5L class but some think I might be better off starting in the 2.5L class. Just looking for any thoughts or recommendations that could help get me going in the right direction. What should you look for in a used boat - besides it floating. LOL! Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Oh ya, I have joined the APBA and do have a physical scheduled for late spring. I am unable to attend the capsule training being offered at the end of February in Tonawanda but would like to attend one elsewhere. Are there any being offered in the Detroit area? Anyway, let me hear what you got to offer and thanks in advance for sharing.

Welcome Dave, If you are still thinking about 5 liter I have a very nice Staudacher 5 liter with an Alt capsule for sale in the shop. Brand new motor top to bottom, new paint, custom trailer, and 3 props. Feel free to pm me if you would like to talk about it.

Dan, I have checked out the IPC site but do not know if is fully operational. Under the classifieds, there is nothing listed in any of the categories. Nice site and I visit it frequently. I have also been checking out roostertails, the APBA site, the CBF site and Hydroplane Quebec. Lots of good info.

I'm kind of located in "no man's land" with respect to racing. I live around Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

I have also been in contact with Brian Reed from the Marine Prop Riders and also Mark Webber regarding there club and what is offered.

Hey Dave!

I didn't see you at the CME show... did you make it? I had a some 5L races and other classes on DVD's there to show you.

Have you called Glen Stevenson? Call him... he'll point give you contact details to people you should be talking to. Glen knows everyone and has lots of experiance. He won't steer you wrong. When I started inboard I was shocked at how little info was online... seems you gotta call people for inboard info.

The IPC website is awesome looking, but rarely has stuff for sale on it.

Roostertails.net is good sometimes.

I've seen people start in 5L... but it takes some learning and nerve. If you have some race experiance maybe you can handle it. Otherwise 2.5L is still a heck of ride when they get rolling!

I'd order the $40 race season DVD set from the www.CBFNC.ca site... you'll see lots of racing and get a feel for 2.5L and 5L.

Many people will help you out... jsut seems they are phone call away and not a website away.

Sorry, to correct myself... the DVD's I see for sale on the CBF site are GP ones... I know there is a full inboard class DVD too... not sure who sells it then... the CBF office could likely tell you because they sent me a copy for the shows.

I couldn't get down to the show due to work commitments. It seems as though whenever I plan some personal stuff, that work thing always rears its ugly head! Never fails. Was the show a success? I did email Glen and he has offered to get me some pit passes which I will definitely take him up on. I have also been emailing back and forth with Bert and am trying to find a day to take a run down there and see him. He has been very helpful and I am looking forward to meeting with him soon. I was going to go for the capsule training in Tonawanda but something came up. I will keep my eye out for another one.
Are you doing any other shows?

We're done the shows for this year... where in the GTA do you live?

Worth a trip to Berts shop whether you want new or not as I'm sure you will learn lots there and see stuff under construction.

Detroit usually has a cell test day. One can likely be taken at CBF race site too if it is pre planned. OPC events usually have them at the race too I think. Doing it in a pool is much nicer I'd think, but a lake with the fishies is more real, haha
