The old iron started easier way back because the original service c engines ran on gasoline and oil. They basically were stock engines. Methanol came in a few years later. Also, the didn't have hop up guys like Newton, Levindusky, Blankenstine etc who raised port timings, advanced rotor timing lowered cc'c etc. All that go fast stuff can make them hard to start.
When the narrator said "Fourteen year old Little Jackie Maypole" it made me want to do a little research. The year this film was made was 1931. John Maypole and his son Jack were returning to Illinois from the NOA Nationals in Oakland, California. At the Salton Sea MGM was filming a short movie about boat racing. They stopped, joined in and set several World records.
Incidentally, 1930 was Jack's first year racing and he won the first race he ever entered. And too, John Maypole ten years earlier had won the first race he ever entered.
