It is inexcusable that a driver or owner would threaten an official. This is just fun, not life or death.

Easy way to fix that - it is in the rule book (and no not a misprint or typo) that any Inspector who has a major issue with a driver or crew, has the right to not only DQ the driver but also have the whole crew removed from the racesite. All that is needed is good communication between the Inspector and the Referee and zero tolerance. Have the Ref sign one persons card for getting out of hand and it will be so quiet in Inspection, you can hear the needle bearing hitting the cans.

Anyone who takes something like this to that extreme needs a year long time out (not to mention a trip to the wood shed for a lesson in manners )

        Wow

        Been reading this and wow.......

All aside, in my own personal opinion, the correction in the typo should not be implemented until Nov 1 2007. Seems fair to the drivers to me, but I guess the goal is to not be fair to the drivers, but to the sport.

Damed if you do and damed if you don't can be used here. Connie Payne asked a good question, The Parity folks have a lot of power at their finger tips. Will they use it ?

On the flip side, if this is changed, a precedent has been sent and it opens the door to a lot of change. Probably bad for stock.

On another note, I agree with Patric Gleason, Hell has froze over............

This situation is a double edged sword. Since the beginning of this project the motor was approved with only 1:1 gears for use in S.O. The oversite occurred because so few have been raced during the past two years and it is not a normal inspection procedure. Don't ask, don't tell. As soon as it was brought to light that some may be running the 16:17 gears, Ed acted accordingly and did exactly what had to be done. The drivers were advised at the Western Divisionals and a clarification was put in the Propeller Magazine. Precedence has been set many times in our history for these type of errors. It's unfortunate being so close to a National Championship event that this has happened, but better now than in Moses Lake. Nevertheless, the inspection team at the nationals has no choice but to DQ anybody they inspect that has the wrong gear set, due to the clarification in Propeller. The SORC also must abide by that ruling. I know it seems wrong or unfair on the surface and I too jumped in with both feet, but once the emotions settled, I realized that letting this go would be a mistake.

Stock Outboard is all about a level playing field.

True parity is one motor per class.

It's RACING, not just another boat ride!

I have to agree with John. Its sorta dammed if you do dammed if you don't. Im sure that the people involved understand whats going on.....this is simply not important enough to lose any sleep over.

Richard, I know what you're trying to do. And it's not gonna work. Sorry, I doubt I will be ready for either race. Although I wish I could make it there! I really do.

Joe, It's inadvertant I'm sure. But that's a pretty bad segway! LOL

Let's remember Joe, We're not talking about cheaters. We're talking about folks who:
              1.) Read the rulebook
2.) invested their hard earned time and money
3.) got told just weeks before the Nationals that their stuff is not legal.

              Just a bad situation.

                    Tohatsu

Hey...nobody in Region 10, including myself, is accusing the Tohatsu owners around here of cheating. We are having serious dissagrements, obviously, but I don't think they were cheating. Dave

                    • Next step...

                      OK, now that it appears all the reasoning and/ or whining won't change anything I'd like to know 3 things;

                      1) How many owners are affected?
                      2) How much will a new set of gears cost?
                      3) Can they be produced/procured in time?

My guess is that a good wheel with the old gears will still be a pretty good wheel at 1:1, and I think the Tohatsu's will still be plenty competitive. I think to expect these changes at this late date is unfair, but I would still like to see the Tohatsu's make a good showing at Moses Lake. Tony

I have a spare set of 1:1's from my FE I'll loan you for the Nationals. I'm leaving for Olympia on Thursday AM, you can pick them up there.

PM me if you are interested so I can get them pulled out of the spare case.

                          • Question for Ed

OK, it's been 3 days since Ed posted the time line and no one has brought this up yet so here goes.

Ed, why did it take 7 posts and 4 days for you to post the time line?

If that would have been your first post a lot of the responses would have been different or some, like myself, wouldn't have replied at all.

You wouldn't bait the D drivers, would you???

New gears cost $450, plus WA State sales tax. We have plenty of 17:17 and 16:17 gears. Call Sid Bass at the shop (360) 373-3839 to order or to arrange pickup. Follow the instructions for gear replacement, it is very easy, no new shimming involved. Otherwise consider borrowing a lower unit. The Tohatsu lower unit is the Bass Machines model 100U, of which there are about 100 in the racing public.
