  • Sharptown Update......Get well Dick Tyndall

At Sharptown today Dick Tyndall took a nasty spill in CSH substaining nerve damage in his right arm/shoulder which will require surgery to fuse various vertabrates back together. Dick will be transported back to his home in the Richmond, Va area for the operation which we all know will go well and have Dick on his feet again real soon. Gary Pond and i would like to thank everyone who helped pitch in to get Dick's trailer packed up and down the road back to Virginia.

    More to follow soon..........

    Dick-

Sorry to hear about the accident, especially the injuries. I know you worked hard and were very excited about getting back on the water. I'm sure this hurts on many levels.

I wish you a full and speady recovery. I'll touch base when you get settled in at home. Don't hesitate if you need anything.

      Today's Photo

Here's a photo of Dick Tyndall running CSH taken today, before his spill.

Dick - Get well soon. If nothing else will, I hope the meds you get will make you happy. You looked good out there.

Captain America gets CSH ride back............

I just got out of the hospital yesterday about 6PM. I had surgury to fuse two verterbre in my lower neck with a metal plate and screws. the cartilidge there was torn off. The doctors said I was lucky I was not paralyzed. I still cannot move my right arm. I can move my fingers, thumb, hand and wrist, and have some movement in my shoulder. Doctors say this is nerve damage in my shoulder. We will start looking at this next week. I am wearing a neck brace and a sling. I am sure it will be a long time before I am back at the races. My helmet is hanging in the garage with a scrape across the top of it...........the face shield is broken off. This is where it will stay. It will be a reminder that I finally had the balls to do what my Dad and all of you do at the races every weekend. You have no idea how much respect i have for everyone that races. Everyone has been friendly and helpfull to me to make me feel like I'm part of the family. Also, a big thank you to everyone who helped in getting my stuff packed in my trailer and to Aimie Pond who drove it back to Richmond. Thanks to everyone for the get well wishes. I have a LOT of bruises of various colors and I'm sore all over, but it is nice knowing that there are people out there that care about you.
I asked Gary Pond about getting my Crew Chief job back helping with Abby's boats and he said it would be the same deal as the last time............. .17 an hour and all the nabs and Mountain Dew i could drink. It doesn't sound like such a bad deal right now!

                              The Right Words

                              Dick,

Good to see that you're back at your computer. Typing one-handed are you?

I want to offer the right words of encouragement without saying the wrong thing. I was at Turn 1 taking pictures so I didn't see what happened to cause your accident at the other end of the course. At one point before the ambulance left with you I looked over and you were sitting up on the stretcher and I thought, "Oh good, his shoulder may be a bit banged up but he's ok." I'm sorry to read that your injuries are more severe than they seemed at first.

At the top of this thread I said you looked good out there. One thing I meant is that you were handling the boat well, staying on the outside in the turns away from the roughest water next to the turn buoys. Austin saw me race the same way once and commented, "It looks like you're not trying." I answered, "Son, I am trying. I'm trying hard. I'm trying hard to stay in the boat."

I think Stock Outboard and Modified Outboard boat racing should be able to accomodate both drivers who live and breathe the sport who choose to slam into a turn and part timers like me. Part timers who, come Monday morning, need to pick up life where they left off Friday afternoon - mortgage, job, bills, family, and all. A part-timer who, more times than not, takes the outside lane around a turn. I can't help but feel that when a less experienced driver is injured racing that we, as a sport, have failed on some level.

I wish you a speedy and painless recovery. Keep us posted.
