The longest, toughest boat race anywhere is underway in Alaska. 12 boats started the race at 11AM today in Fairbanks, and will race 400 miles nonstop to Galena, Alaska today. The crews will overnight there and start the return, 400 mile upriver run at 6AM Sunday.
The Yukon 800 website is being updated in real time with checkpoint times and news using a wireless link at the race HQ at the riverbank.
11 boats are running Yamaha engines, and there is one Tohatsu. If you are unfamiliar with these unique machines, they are 24 foot long, plywood construction, and carry a crew of 3. Rules limit engines to 45.3 ci, stock powerheads with rev limiters removed, standard lower units with nosecones, swinging 20-23 inch 12" diameter cleavers. They carry about 45 gallons of gas to make the nonstop run. Top speeds are in the 78 mph range and the 400 mile record is around 5 hours 35 minutes.
