I just heard today that Rufus "Red" Hall passed away earlier this month. I believe that Rufus was from the Little Washington, North Carolina area. Rufus had been competing in 250cc hydro and 350cc hydro for several years. He joined the PRO category late in life, but really seemed to enjoy motoring around the race course.

I was sorry to hear the news - he was just in Florida at Lake Wales and was helping bring in the bouys at the end of the day. I met him in 2005 at the first Raleigh race that we had - he pitted right near us. He certainly loved racing and tried his best.

Sorry to hear that . . .
I believe Rufus could be classified as a colorful character, and he did love racing. If he were around he might have a *discussion* with David Weaver about "Little Washington." I seem to recall the residents therein prefer the USPS name "Washington."

in my 55 years of racing i will have to put red at the top of most colorful characters i have known. red used to live 20 miles from me in ohio when he raced csh in the 50s. he left the area in the 70s and i couldnt find out what happened to him. he resurfaced at the aof natls in louisiana in the 90s and later bought a couple of pro outfits. he lived on a sailboat in chocowinity nc and recently bought an airstream trailer to reside in. my favorite story of red was from the 50s when we ran a lot of wildcat races in pa wva and ohio. we had all those great windy two lane roads to drive to races. red was going to a race in pa at night after work. it was dark and there was a driver tailgating him with his bright lights on. red tried everything to get this guy to pass him. finally red ran out of patience(red had no patience) he stopped his car in the middle of the road, got his tire iron out, walked back and knocked the guys headlights out. he got back in his car and drove on to the race. red you gave me many humorous memories and also a few trying ones.
thanks for the memories.
race on red!!!!

What's his boat number?
I never met the gentleman but I'm wondering if I have any photos of him or his rig. Checking APBA results we were both at Sharptown, MD in June 2004 and Camden, NC in April 2005. What color is his boat and/or what's his boat number?
Taking a long shot, I have never identified this driver from Sharptown, MD June 2004. Anyone know who it is?Last edited by Mark 72@E; 06-24-2007, 05:32 PM.@@@@@@@@@@@@

I wanted to thank everyone for remembering Rufus "Red" Hall. He was my father in law. We just spend the weekend in Washington NC at his memorial and settling some things with his estate. He loved racing his boats and we all told him he was crazy. He did what he loved up until the end and I hope I can do the same in my life. We will miss him greatly and wanted to thank anyone who helped him find happiness in ths sport he loved so much. Thank you so much for posting these pictures of him that we would have never seen. God bless.

An Instant in Time
One of the things I enjoy about photography is how a photo captures an instant in time. A fraction of a second that by definition is unique. And what seems like an average photo at first glance can become something special on closer study.
Isn’t that Red in his race gear, facing left, behind Mike Schmidt’s boat?
