  • Pro foot-vertical split question

Just took out'a-the-box a Yamato vertical split foot, 1-under gears (new) and all new bear'ns -seals.......came with an adapter plate that is milled and drive shaft hole done...to a MOD tower.....Must'a stared at it for an hour last night dream'n of how it would help my 25MOD and C-MOD Wizard / Merc. set Kilo records someday and Smoke-em at the MODIFIED OUTBOARD NATIONALS in Zanesville, Ohio this summer................foot is polished like chrome....almost blinded me when the o'l chrome-dome reflected in it. ...........spent an hour fig'rn out how to finish machine adapter plate and plumb water...........then just for grins I grabbed a prop to see how it would look with one..............DOH !!!!!!!!!! .....METRIC shaft.........UGH!

Before I box it up and return, ...........would anyone be interested in it?...

NOT cheep and thats why I have to return it........

OR, ....what would it cost me to have 9/16" shaft installed...?..(Cost me a bunch so far...so might as well dig a little deeper ?.......)
OR,......I could have a bucket of my props bored to 15MM and get bush'ns fer em when runn'n other foots but............UGH!

    thanks,

    Easy

Bush your props. I run thses a lot, and we have bushings for the props. Waste of money for a new shaft. Spend $30.00 and get a dozen bushings made. If you need help call me. My local machine shop can make them, or there are SEVERAL sources mentioned here on HR several times. Tietz, Macafee, and a few others out east. I think Jerry Davids does it, I bet Brown Machine & Tool can do it........

Now then, the picture you are showing makes this a horizontal straight cut gear foot, not a spiral cut gear vertical split foot. The straight cut gearboxes will not hold up under a Seuper E, but will for short while under the 44inch merc. You have a straight cut gearbox in the photo. Should hold up well under your 25 or C Mod. I imagine years of service before it breaks or wears out the gears.

Adaptor is quick and easy as well. Simply take a pattern off it, cut a block of metal thick enough, drill the water hole in it, tap it, run your line to your inlet at the powerhead. The water hole you can drill all the way through top to bottom if you want to, just make sure it seals against the top of your down housing to not let any water out. Drill the hole into the side to tap for oyur fitting and hose. Make sense ? Works for us.

Hey Steve, Bore your props to 11/16". That way they will fit "D" merc units. Then use a bushing 11/16"od to 15mm to fit the yamato. An 11/16" od 9/16 id bushing will work on your current unit. Trifecta. Clear as mud huh? Call me for any help. Thanks, Bryan Tharp (405-632-2844)prop shop

        Dave / Bryan,
        Thanks for the info!!!!!
Gonna keep it and rework all my wheels....Alan and I swap some of our wheels around anyway with his D-MOD foot.

        Dave, guess I gotta remember;
        Go-karts= horizontal
lawn mowers=vertical........... .....Hey wait a min.....DAVE, are you sure this is not a vertical split?

Dave any chance a seeing ya at Franklin, Zanesville, IOA races?
Might try to make one of the NBRA Nationals if I find truck camper for my dodge diesel duelly.....never be able to feed the motor home on a long run.....

          Steve,

The pic of the foot with all the screws on the side is the straight cut gearbox. If your foot only has screws on the botton of the torpedo, it is the spiral cut gearbox.

Call TJ for gears. Of course all the stuff comes from Montoya, but he has folks all over with the stuff.

I doubt you will see much of me this year unless you come to NBRA stuff. I am going to try and make a couple IOA races if my schedules don't conflict.

Grab a tent and come have some fun in Centralia, and Shelbyville. Great camping there, and you don't have to feed the motorhome ! You know they make real comfy cots now-a-days. Also make some real nice air mattreses that are just as comfy as home.

Talk to Shaun Brill on your C Mod. They tried a lot of combinations on gear ratios under the Merc. He might be able to tell you some ideas for your props. I don't think a 1:1 will work real well under a Merc unless you prop it, and so far nobody I have seen has accomplished this yet. If so, I don't know about it. The one under may work better, and the two under might work. Just remember, they are different diameter gears than the Merc gearboxes so the same gear ratio in each gearbox will run different props and set ups.
