Also, look at the rough water in that race. Can you imaging all of the whining from the hydrobout drivers today if they had to race in that? And people wonder why I call them "sissy boats." Ed.
I can tell you that I was about 6 or 7 and took a ride in the hydrobout with a 20H. My first ride, I got the wheel, Dad had the throttle. But it was not an A boat. I think this is what you may be thinking of Ryan.
I believe the first side fin that was used regularly was on a pod that stuck out from the side of the boat, they changed the rules so it couold not stick out any farther than the side of the boat. I cannot remember who it was but it was a c runabout I believe. Anyone remember who had the first pod fin? I think the name started with a P and was from the east coast
Kerry,
I remember seeing the boat you described at Columbiavlle, Mi in 83 or 84. I don't recall the racer's name. But if it began with a P could it have been Pontek? Pontious? Hell i've killed off to many brain cells since then to remember.
It wasn't an ASR, but the first side fin runabout I remember seeing was Spud Hemp at Dayton. Early 80's. It had a pod extending out from the side of the boat...which then had a fin attached to it.
Cannot recall what class he was racing. Maybe 20ssR...or 25. Davey...this is the boat you described earlier.
I believe Casey Minton was the first OMC ASR Nationals winner with a side fin boat. 1990.
I think Bud Pinto was using a side fin in '86 when he won CSR. I know his
25ssR during that time had a side fin. Fred Miller ran a side fin 25ssR during the Merc Challenge years as well...late 80's.
That is the boat. He ran 20ssr, 25ssr, Bsr with the 20H and a Hot Rod, and 15ssr on it. But concentrated on BSR(20H) and 25ssr. Yes it had a pod, or sponson that the fin mounted to.
Jon Peustow also had a side mounted fin that ran in CSR from that era. He still runs the boat to this day.
