FER engine
Bob,
If it was me, I'd seriously think about a 44 Merc so you could run DMR and FER. We have been getting more and more DMR at all our club races (5-7 boats) and also some, but fewer FER. Unless you were set on just FER, you could get twice as much water time with one rig every weekend. We'd love to have you come run with us.

The 49CUIN OMC 3-Holer has shown time after time to be the top contender in the FE classes. I have seen a 44 merc beat the 49's but not very often, if the 49 gets out front, a 44 is not going to catch it. The OMC is also readily available and all parts are available unlike some of the merc parts . The Tohatsu will eventually be a good FE Motor. When I say eventually, I mean that I hear people are in the process of building a FE Tohatsu and we have yet to see it run. But I believe that it will be the next hot FE motor.
Just my 2 cents

As you know most of the OMC FEH / motors are a cross between the 55 60 65 and the 70 hps motors with parts used from all block from one rods from another head and carbs from another. The rules in the tec for AOF lets you use the same formate as the OMC on porting balancing and pipe, but here where it get interesting, Under the tec for Omc and the Tohatsu no material can be removed from the reed cage and there are no mod for the carb (no material allowed to be added or removed ) on another site someone is modified a Tohatsu with opening the reed cage and adding 70 hp carb and other mods which is not allowed in AOF I do not know about NBRA or APBA. You were at the National Meeting last year in spokane when I sumitted with the the Help of Sid Bass the Tohatsu to FEH/FER sometimes the rule seam to change and the wording of a few sentences disapear when the rule is sent to vote or after it is passed
But what do I know I am back to my rock spud

...75 stinger is essentially same block as all the other 49cu in versions.Rods and wrist pins are a bit smaller/lighter.Will work just fine. I've yet to encounter a 44 merc,or for that matter, the 60 cu in merc that will compete with the 3cyl omc. Sid Bass makes a gear foot and mid section for the omc.Avoid using less gutsy gear foot...a good running 3cyl is a torquey animal.Lee Teitze makes an ideal mid section and mount system if you want to spend more money. Yamaha
You might consider a 40-50 HP Yamaha. Legal in APBA,NBRA,AOF. A lot of people do not realize that Yamaha is still selling the 50 hp 2 cycle. I think they are the only manufacturer still doing so in the USA.Here in the NBRA Dick Falbe runs one on a Krier run. Most probably as fast as anyone in the country. The Tohatsu and the Yamaha are virtually the same engine spec wise. Do not know who copied who but the Yamaha has been around since the early 80s and are readily available. I tryed to find a used Tohatsu with no luck. So I guessif you wanted one you would have to purchase a complete eng. from Bass.

FER options
Bob,
I agree with all the posts that if you want to really run FER you would need the FE engine. The only problem you might run into is the opportunity to run it at local races. IOA has enough DMR guys that you are pretty much guaranteed 5-6 boats at a race. We have had several that there weren't enough to run FER. I was just bringing up the point that you would get more boat time that way.

steves right
first off welcome to mod (mods rule!!! loud pipes saves lives) anyways d mod would be a better choise to start with, there is always enough d mods at every race in basically all regions,Its a large mod class and trust me upper 80's is damm fast.Next it it cheaper to put together a d mod over fe, from the tower up it is very close in price, its the lower unit that will get you.Youll have to run a bass or merc unit for fe and there 1250.00 to 1400.00 a unit but in d mod you can run a yamato and there only 300.00 and up big diferance! Some people say merc parts are hard to find sorry but there not 44 ci parts are in every boat yard around for cheap! and pistons and rings are readily available new from merc and aftermarket.if you go with fe and an omc motor there pretty common too but cost a bit more for salvage motors though.there is also A lot of people that would give info on setting a d merc up, including myself.just my 2 cents .mike

OMC - Yammy - Tohotsu
Any of these would be a good choice. The most popular right now is the OMC. The Yammy has potential as well as the Tohotsu. Once you can modify the engines, they should become very competitive. However, the smaller cube of the Tohotsu and the Yammy might not become dominating. The 51CI will compete very well. It is fast bone stock.
Bass had good gearboxes and towers. If you buy a Bass unit, I suggest the Bass tower to compliment. If you go Tietz, you will need to modify it slightly to accept the Bass. No big deal.
At any rate, if you want FER do it. I have one and tried to run it at several IOA events, but not enough guys would step up and run it, and or sold off the real FER stuff. So I hung a D Mod on my runabout and it competes well. Best advice is to call afew folks to see that they will step up for you to run, or build some FER to go along. It is a fun class.Dave Mason
