  • which yamato to buy

I have the opportunity to buy a yam 102 new in the box (NOS) but was wondering if I should go with a newer 302 which parts are much more available??. Besides the gearbox what has to be done to 102 and also a 302 to make them race ready. Not sure what route to go.thanks mike

302! No matter what class you are going to run.

      Which class?

Depends on which class you're going to run. OSY-400 has no height restriction. The 102 should be better there. Make sure that you spend the necessary 1500 bucks on the gearcase alone (not including cutting the head and porting the engine) so that you can run even with the bottom of the boat and still pump water. You may need to make your own roping plate and center coil though, these are all gone!

In CSH, the SORC has put forth a position that the newer 302 which is currently available will be promoted and supported. If CSH is your class, buy the 302. Plus, in CSH you won't be racing against 125lb. 14 year-olds whose total rig weighs 50 lbs less than yours. CSH has a minimum overall weight.

Of course, if you can get your hands on the very limited 202 and you're running OSY-400, that one is well-known to be faster "out of the box". Only a select few have it though, and, apparently, there are no plans by the PRO Commission to change this phenomenon. For OSY-400, the scarce, obsolete and illusive 202 is the best selection of all engines legal in the class, if you can get one.

Vislaguy: Was that a serious question?
