  • D-Mod on stock midsection? (No Pipes?)

Here's a question.....- Somebody, somewhere... at some race -
Had told me that somebody had a D-Modified Engine (44xs/500) mounted on a stock midsection and somehow figured out how to cut or modify the tuner inside.

Does anyone have any info on this? Was it successfull? Was the purpose to quiet down the motor? What was the performance results? If anything... who did this?

Thanks in advance for any help or info

The pipe in a 44XS is not designeed for optimum performance. It was designed that way to get the 44XS performance better than a MK-55 but only a bit so as not to obsolete boats and props immediately when it was introduced and also to allow the MK-55s to stay somewhat competitive rather than just collectors items. Fred Hauenstein and John Peustow spent at least a day of testing figuring it out. It was interesting to see the tower housing and gearcase removed from the motor so they could get at the pipe with the powerhead and top adapter plate still in place on the boat. Unlike the current Tohatsoo fiasco, considerable testing and evaluation was done by both Mercury and the Stock Outboard V-P back then.

So there is more power for you to unlock but it still won't match that from a good set of ordinary pipes.

      Geeze

Why would you say something stupid like Tahatsu Fiasco ? You want to kill boat racing and kill your income as a boat builder ? Keep up the good work on promoting boat racing..................

Thanks for da info Sam. I really was hoping something like that could suppress the noise, be somewhat competitive, but enabling me to test on my two local lakes down in Kenosha county, WI.

My first year in this I took a mod out on Lake Shangri-la, I watched 15 to 20 homeowners walk out of their basements toward the shoreline as I took several laps.. I thought most were gonna say, "Hey what an awesome looking ride you have".
Instead one guy had a shovel, another had two fists clenched and there was even one guy who was shaking his shotgun at me from the end of his pier !! No Lie.
I yanked the boat out while 3 of those guys stood watching and then the cops came. Lucky for me the cop's couldnt write a ticket for noise without actually catching me on the water.
