Well after plenty of badgering I have decided to let the cat out of the bag as to whats in Issue 3 due out in a couple of weeks.

Here is the list of whats in there as well as a sample pic for a few of them:

    * F1 Racing in Abu Dhabi - UAE

    * Offshore Superseries Worlds in Destin

    * Drag Boat Worlds in Phoenix, AZ

    * Aussie F1s Downunder - Season Review

    * Records Week at Conniston in the United Kingdom

    * Class III 6 Litre Championship in Dubai

    Plus:

        Richard & Merc Guy,

I have told members of this forum that if someone wants to send me some photos and stories to put into the magazines, or at least tell us where and when you are racing we will get someone to cover it.

So far no one has bothered to contact us. We sure as heck cant help your sport if the sport doesnt want to help itself.

Ned, I'm going to take issue with your statement, partially because of my frustration with dealing with the media in trying to promote this sport, and partially because I think a publication that covers boat racing has a journalistic responsibility to cover all boat racing - not just the boat racing that can afford to cover themselves for you.

I have have contacted sports page editors and asked how to just get a schedule published in the weekly racing calendar. "Just send it to the Sports Desk". I do that, and nothing shows up. Wheeled racing organizations with no event scheduled are listed, but we're not - even for a race that has been a fixture for 58 years. I get no response from any press release, or from sending results before deadline. Unless I want to buy an ad.

As a national publication, however, there resources available for you (at no cost but a few minutes of your time) to find out when we are racing. Ever been to the ABPA website? Try this link:
              http://www.apba-racing.com/apps/race_schedule/index.php

Not alot there, because as noted above there is little winter activity. Take a look again on about May 1st, though, and you will find a lot of events listed, as well as contact people.

Now unfortunately, even though the APBA Office wants a tentative schedule ASAP, things don't go on the schedule until a sanction goes in. But all of the information below (as well as the tentative schedule for the rest of the country) is in the current edition of APBA Propeller.

As another heads up, the APBA National meetings are in Los Angeles at the end of January. All of the national awards (all categories) will be presented there. It will be a who's who of boat racing. Will you get someone to cover it?

So, in order for you not to have to wait, here's the tentative schedule for Region 10, 11, and 12. That should give you an idea of what is planned on the West Coast for 2007. I can lead you to water - now, will you drink?

                Mike,

I will answer the various points you outline in your post.

                1. I am not sure how you can justify the comment that we have a journalistic responsibility to cover all forms of racing, even those that cant afford to cover themselves. The only responsibility we have is to ourselves and to our readers, NO ONE else. When we started the magazine, which I might add is only up to Issue 3, we contacted the APBA and asked for their assistance by sending us points of contact and race dates and locations etc so we could cover the various classes of racing. Guess what help we got from them - NOTHING. They couldnt even be bothered getting off their asses and sending us a list of contacts or dates etc, and this was right in the middle of the season. All we were told is if you want something go and find it on our website. We decided there and then that we wouldnt waste our time. If thats the response we got from an assn who is supposed to be there to help promote the sport then we were up against it and would put our resources elsewhere.

                2. You say you have contacted sports page editors so I presume thats regarding daily mainstream newspapers. Not really sure how you can compare a dedicated powerboat racing magazine with the Daily Bugle or whatever it is. I also presume you were wanting to get paid for the images you supplied them since you are a photographer. I cant speak for a daily newspaper but you are comparing apples and oranges here. With regards to press releases you cant really compare us to them as I dont think I have ever seen a press release from you come into my inbox.

                3. For your info we are an international publication, not a national one. We are based here in Auckland, New Zealand and cover powerboat racing from all corners of the world.

                4. No we wont have anyone to cover a prize giving in January as the magazine was designed to cover powerboat racing events, not really prize givings. Our readers want to see photos and stories about boats racing and the action associated with it. You may think otherwise but I base my editorial content on what my readers feedback says.

                5. I am going to go back to your comment where you say we have a responsibility to cover all forms of powerboat racing. Well then let me ask you this, who do you think should cough up for the associated costs to cover an event. Here is an example. If you have a three day event then I have to send one of the team to that event. That involves airfares, then hotel, need a rental car to get around as well as meals. At a bare minimum you are talking at least $2500 and I bet you all you want you just expect us to cover it as part of covering that segment of the sport. Well how about this, there are over 180 seperate classes of powerboat racing around the world, and from your opening statement you expect us to cover every single one of them. How do you propose we fit them all into an 80 page magazine published 6 times per year. ALL of the costs for travel, accommodation etc etc etc come out of MY pocket so I decide where we put our resources. Will I cover classes such as the small classes that you run - absolutely, but it will be where and when I can. We dont ask associations to front up with $5000 and then we will attend, or that they have to provide airfares and hotels etc, all we ask associations for is access for our photographers and journos so they can get around and talk to people. Thats it, nothing more and nothing less. We dont ask people to take adverts in return for coverage. Look at the magazine, you wont see adverts from ANY association in there.

We cant be in all places all of the time which is why we develop relationships with various photographers and journos around the world, so they can cover events for us that we cant or arent able to get to. Instead of attacking us straight off the bat you should have put forward why this segment of the sport should covered. You make patronising comments through your post and then when we dont cover your segment of racing you will make us out to be the bad guy so we are in a lose lose situation from the beginning.

                Thats my two cents worth.

                Ned
