Joe “Fo-Fo” Travers, 59, died peacefully at his home in Quincy, Massachusetts on December 7, 2006.
Joe, a life long Quincy resident, grew up near Wollaston Beach and became interested in boats and racing at an early age. Joe spent his early years tagging along to the races with the original “Quincy Gang” of such racers as Clark and Brooks Maloof, Chuck McCabe, Racer Allen, Jack Neely, Jim Malloy and many others.
Joe began racing in ASR in the early sixties until, as he put it, “The Vietnam draft wiped out the whole AU field in Region One.”
After his military service, Joe returned home and continued racing ASR while working at Boston Whaler Company in Rockland, Massachusetts. In 1972, Joe went to work for good friend and racing partner, Clark Maloof, at Clark Craft Marine and was instrumental in the development of the first 25 Super Stock racing engine ever produced, a class he raced after its inception into APBA.
After his retirement from racing, Joe took on the pit crew duties for “The Boss,” Clark Maloof, and traveled the country extensively on the stock and PRO circuit. When Clark retired from racing in the early 90’s, Joe took on the duties as equipment manager for the South Shore Outboard Association, a club he belonged to for more than forty years.
In more recent years, Joe pulled the club trailer to Region One races all over New England, took care of the patrol boats and spent much of his time at “The Barn” in Mansfield, Massachusetts, helping his friends and working in the pits for “Team Scott.”
Joe and his wife, Helen Zwicker, opened their home to many SSOA club meetings including the recent November 2006 meeting which Joe and Helen hosted less than one month before his death.
Joe will be missed by the members of the South Shore Outboard Association, Team Scott, and the many friends he made all over the country throughout the years.
Never a suit and tie kind of guy, Joe will be buried in his APBA jacket.
Visiting hours are Sunday, December 10, 2006 5:00-8:00 p.m. at Keohane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock Street, Quincy, Massachusetts [(617) 773-3551.] Funeral Monday, December 11, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, North Quincy.
