  • How would YOU build your CSH!

    Hello,
My name is Tom Morgenthau and I am on a team of seven senior mechanical engineers at the University of New Hampshire. Our senior design project this year is to design, build, and race a class CSH hydroplane by next summer.

Now my question for the racers...
If you could have one thing changed on your boat, what would it be. OR if you have one design on your boat that you feel is imperative, what is it? We are trying to get some racer info on how to design our hydroplane seeing how our team consists of brand new racers.

Any input would be greatly appreciated from the racers as well as the existing boat builders who might have some tip for us!

Thank you very much for your time.

    Modeling

Can you do 3D modeling with the design when you are completed?

Yes, we will modeling in Pro-E. We will be importing the design into an ocean engineering application where we can analyze CFD over the entire hull.

I'd like to ask though... how did you come up with this idea? Are one of you already connected to racing somehow?

I just graduated from college with an ME degree in May, and I live in Massachusetts, so I look forward to seeing you at the races next year.

Yes, think outside of the box but don't forget to read the rulebook before you start designing.

Good luck, and post your thoughts here- there are a lot of knowledeable racers on this web page who will be able to support your ideas or shoot them down.

                    Boat Measurements...

                    TO TOM MORGENTHAU,

MAKE SURE YOU START WITH THE CORRECT BASIC CSH HYDRO DIMENSIONS.

FOR INSTANCE: AFTERPLANE LENGTH (DISTANCE FROM THE AFT EDGE OF THE SPONSON TO THE AFT EDGE OF THE BOTTOM.

BOTTOM WIDTH AND SPONSON LENGTH. ALSO, SPONSON AND REAR NON-TRIP
                    CHINE ANGLES.

THESE ARE ALL IMPORTANT. MEASURE THE BOATS OR TALK TO DRIVERS THAT ARE WINNING.

THEN WHEN YOU BUILD IT MAKE SURE IT IS SQUARE, TRUE AND STRAIGHT.

ARE YOU GOING TO BUILD IT WITH WOOD OR WITH SOME COMPOSITES AND HONEYCOMB PANELS? KEEP IT LIGHT... YOU CAN ALWAYS ADD LEAD AND THE LIGHTER BOAT WILL BE BETTER FOR OSY 400.

PLEASE KEEP US INFORMED ABOUT THE PROGRESS OF YOUR PROJECT.

                    GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR PROJECT,

                    DEAN HOBART

Some of you might get pissed off but I say go with the class that has the longest hull so you have more real estate to experiment with. With the length of CSH there is only so much you can do until it no longer is a CSH.

This experiment should be done with a MOD FE or a Pro boat which will really give these guys a bit more real estate to implement some out of the box ideas etc.

Its a CSH that must be made according to the rules and specs so how will it be any different aside from maybe a space age type material etc. Yell and scream all you want I think a project like this should not be done on Stock Class hull.

This is just my opinion you don't have to agree.

My point exactly a project like this needs to be a radical new design. This is a team made up of seven senior mechanical engineers. This is not a group of Sunday school teachers.

Looks great you are clearly thinking out of the box which is what I encourage this group of guys to do. If they want to race CSH more power to them, its one of the most popular classes in US. But if they want to go radical design they need to look at other classes. I have never built or design any type of boat a day in my life so my hat is off to all the builders etc.

                            How can get...

The rest of the Schools to ad something like this to your curicculem( SP). Kind of like the SAE program. You could build two boats. A comp boat, to learn basics on and a wild KILO boat. The costs wouldn't be too prohibitive and man OJT dialing in the comp boat would really let you play with the wild one. That would satisfiy everyones goals.
Also points for the Team work , and sundri other positions needed for a succsessful racing venture. Welcome on board. Lot's of folks will help you on what will most likely become one of the funnest ventures you will endevour. Make tons of freinds.

but Dan, they want to race in the biggest APBA stock class!

go for it! Contact Marc Johnson or even Jon Steen from JDS Racing........this site should give you some kind of idea on building a CSH (or any other hydro for that matter).
