"Service to others is a worthy goal for an aspiring professional and the best response all lawyers can make to our critics. We might also urge the bashers to read their Shakespeare more carefully.

The words, ‘Let’s kill all the lawyers,’ were not spoken by a disgruntled litigant (or even by Henry VI’s press secretary). They were uttered by the conspirators in Cade’s Rebellion, who planned to overthrow the English government, destroy the ancient rights of English men and women, [as such “rights” were available to women at that time], and establish a virtual dictatorship.

Through the rebels’ threat, Shakespeare reminds the groundlings that lawyers, as protectors of that system of ordered liberty, are as much an obstacle to a rebellion that would curtail liberty as any garrisoned castle. Thus, Cade’s path to oppression leads inevitably over their bodies…".

      — John J. Curtin, Jr., Esq., President, American Bar Association, published in the ABA Journal, September, 1990.

Actually, I don't like lawyers much myself, either. They're too stuffy. Ed.

If there is ever a concern like this and you as a boat racer don't want to bring it to the parents attention please say something to the rescue crew (if it is us....H&H) Al or myself would be more than happy to speak to the kids or parents and keep it VERY neutral. I hate to see a kid crash and get injured.

We are at the boat races to do our very best to keep EVERYONE safe.

The helmet issue is something that ALL parents should teach, i have seen as many ADULTS rideing scooters around w/o helmets as i have seen kids. The adults riding them need to show the younger kids how to be safe. Would you let them race with a life jacket??

            Memories

Tomtall...you brought back more memories in those few paragraphs than I have thought about in years (and more logic). Sure was fun! And as the man says..."and nobody got hurt" (at least not much).

We're bringing back "Way back When." When people had the ability to take care of a situation the moment it happens, instead of having a little meeting so they can feel good about themselves when people jump on the band wagon.

I'm getting a four wheeler for my son and we are going to all the Canadian Races!!!!!

The reason I'm so harsh is that one of those little riders is my cousin(aka:little brother)

Went to a boat racing web site and a p!$$!&g contest broke out I was at grace lake and my 3 year old almost got run over by a young girl on a scooter. (and yes, I was holding his hand) How about we just make sure we watch out in 07? Great racing by the way. 5 years to go an I will be out here crying "check his fuel, he's cheating"

Ed, thanks...you just made me laugh at the end of a long day!

Sheri, no offense was intended to you or any of your family. I was not at the event and merely made a comment. I apologize if you were offended. I, along with many know Dylan to be a fine young man. None of us want anyone in our racing family to get hurt and that was the only intention.

In hind sight, I witnessed two accidents as a kid in two seperate incidents at Dayton. Tom Smith in the 70's and Ginny Cronk in the 80's. Where were our parents? Probably working on the judges stand or inspection....

Thanks Jeff. I realize you weren't there and I shouldn't have gotten so defensive. I was upset when I read the post. I should have ignored it but I didn't. Onto the next race let's see what people can find to talk about this weekend.

                        Speak up by all means...

OK, I know this thing needs to die out but I do have a point to make. Let me say right up front that I am Dylan Runne's, Aunt Robin. I am also Ryan Runne's mother and any of you who know Ryan know that there is no kid around with more risk-taking, daredevil blood running through his veins. I'm happy to say that on several occassions other people (boatracers, hometown friends and even sisters) have alerted John and I to possible situations we should know about. And I am very grateful to those friends. Ryan has survived his wild days and is an outstanding young man, as Dylan will be too. My problem was not that this thread was started, this forum is intended to bring up issues of concern. I do however, have a problem with Mr. Abbott making this an open issue without having brought the concern to Dylan's parents first. It doesn't matter that you didn't mentions names, race site etc. people there knew who you were talking about. If you were truely concerned with someone being hurt then the appropriate thing to do was to seek out the parents and tell them. Then if you felt it was an issue others should be aware of,(which it probably is) by all means exercise your rights, get on hydroracer and speak. Then you could have ended your post by saying the parents acted swiftly and appropriately instead of leaving the implication that nothing was done about it. It would have taken you less time to find Dylan's parents then it did to type the post in the first place. I agree with Matt Gallagher (yes, another relative, we stick together) when he suggested that we take care of a situation at the time it occurs instead of waiting for ours to jump on your band wagon. Everyone would appreciate that.

Was not going to respond to this thread but what the he!!...

At the Stock Nationals Dylan was riding his "bike" with no helmet. I stopped him and asked him what his mom would say if she saw him with out his helmet. (figured he's more scared of him mom than his dad) He said she would tell me to put it on. I said, then put it on. He put the helmet on and smiled.

My point...Just take it upon yourself and say something if you see someone doing something that looks unsafe. If the kid smarts off...find their parent.

Well I will finish this off by simply saying that had I recognized the kid with the helmet as being Dylan I would have approached Rich. I know Dylan is a good kid and I've helped to get him started at races in the past and also paid for my son to run "J" when he was no longer running the class to ensure there were enough boats so Dylan could run. But at the race in question I too was also busy helping my son with his 2 boats, doing patrol boat duty and helping others in the pits.

So if this has offended folks, it was not the intent but rather to bring to light an issue that is often overlooked when we complete the insurance papers for a race. There is a box, that everyone checks saying there will be no motorcycles in the pits. So if an accident happens then the insurance company could possibly have an exit for coverage.

So in hindsight I still beleive the addressing of this was handled in a professional and non-threatening manner, it was meant to bring an issue to light, not to rally sympathy or gather bandwagon jumpers................
