  • American Hot Rod hits the water

On Friday afternoon at Lock Haven, Ed Runne launched the new 15ci Hot Rod for the first time, with Greg Lyons, 18-P, making a total of about 30 laps. With the exception of Greg running out of fuel, the test sessions were very successful, with Ed Runne making numerious adjustments. As Ed promised, it was even started in the water. I am sure there will be much more to come. Ed was justifiably proud.

    Great news

When do we get to hear the particulars? Phil: I'm dying for the photos. Also, what is that hose running from the top of the block to the bottom of the head for? Ed Hearn.

              New Hot Rod

Just got home. I am putting together some video on the testing for Ed. I'll have photos up tomorrow or Wednesday. Video if Dan can set up the link. Classes, prices, etc are in the hands of APBA and the the engine builders. This is the first really exciting new thing for Stock Outboard Racing in years. Hopefully it is a sign of the future. Anyone who has run a hot rod knows it is a real racin' engine and what a ride.

I was going to let Eddie or Ron answer the questions but will fill you in alittle on the testing besides dont want Ed to loose to much sleep....lol We used my MyChron data logger it works every time all the time and on anything. O do have to say its really impresive for the first time on a boat to run as hard and still not come back in a basket. Now max rpms it turned getting on plane was 11,800 average rpm with the prop that was on it was 7400 this is all with the carb out of calibartion. Average temp 190 and average temp at the end of a long hard run was 210 thats at the end of the streight. It runs so cool you can actually take a plug out right after its run with your fingers without getting burnt. It was run lean at one point while playing with the carb where the motor stoped and still never hurt the motor. As for speed the first few runs it was between and A and a B and the last couple runs was right in the middle of the pack with speed and this is with an as cast gear foot low timming uncalibrated carb. Oh and Ed that hose is for the totally different water routing system. Will let Ed give the rest of the info. just have to say its here and will be a great reliable easy to work on motor. Ed Rnne did a fantic job anf hats off to hime and to Ron who bought the HotRod company and make it all happen.

                        Grass Lake test run

I know this is last minute, but what are the chances of getting this engine to Grass Lake for a pre-three horse test run? This is probably the biggest stock race in the central division outside of the Divisional Championship. Ed Hearn.

So by the sounds of this it's a B engine once tuned correctly and proped out right. I wonder if an A would be detuned or bored different? What was the original plan? A-B-25-C motors?

Regardless, great to hear it hit the water! Congrats to all involved. And yes, not to take away from Bass, Scott and anyone else... but I believe this is a completely new motor basically from the ground up, not an existing powerhead on a racing bottom. Major accomplishement!

                              Ed,
The way Hank Runnie explained it to me..."The water fills the block first. Then travels through the hose to the bottom of the head. The head gasket keeps the block water independent from the cyl. head water. This prevents air-pockets/hot-spots......."

(Hank looked like a proud Grandpa talk'n about the motor............. )
