The young ones
Out of the whole article I think this sums up our needs for young people getting introduced to the sport.
"I don't think I've seen a kid yet who came out of those boats without an ear-to-ear grin on their face," he said.Tom L.

Congratulations SOA. Sounds Like you had a great race weekend.
Public exposure is what this sport needs to make us grow. If even one person saw those articals in the news paper and decides to give boat racing a try we have gained. I have tried to bring boat racing back to Cedar Rapids, Iowa with not much luck because nobody knows who we are. A few years back Connie Payn and myself tryied to get a sponsorship from a Bar/Lounge that was located along the river with a huge obsevation deck right at the first turn of our race course. They came back with the reply "you sound like a bunch of out laws." The local paper has to be called time and time again to come out and do any coverage. And then you might get a small photo in the sports section.
Keep up the good work Seatle.DOUG SCHULTZ--HERE FOR THE SUPPORT OF OUR SPORT

Originally posted by Dr. ThunderI know it was a long time ago but ... wasn't the Stock Outboard Nationals held in Cedar Rapids about '72-73 ... seems to me it was very successful but after 30+ years maybe the town has forgotten!!!
I was just a little kid then 4 and 5 years old.
Being in the boat buissness we get alot of old timers that come in and see our equiptment and talk about watch races years ago down on the river. And we held a couple of good races here in the 90's as a part of the towns big month long freedom festival. We had huge crowds and was the big talk on the river for a month or so then we were forgotten. Cedar Rapids City government has no agenda for bringing fun to the city.
I am in real good with the CR Riverfront dept. and they always try to help me. But the rest of the city is another story. They have now built a Bike trail through the middle of our pit area and last year when I approached them to get a permit they told me I could not close the bike trail for a weekend. I am still working on them but getting sponsors is another problem.
Any ideas how to get support?DOUG SCHULTZ--HERE FOR THE SUPPORT OF OUR SPORT
