      Dsh

Jim Sweeny outran all for the DSH title. Great Job Big Jim, proud of your driving. It was an all out battle, O'leary showed very impressive speed having the most top end of anyone, but was a tad early in the first heat.

Should be a very interesting battle if both of those folks go to Wakefield.

Some other results on Saturday that I recall

FEH - Rich Welch - DOMINATING the competition by at least 1/4 a lap to half a lap. Just drove around them. Impressive speed in Jim Robb's rig. Might be the one to watch in Wakefield if they end up going.

I can't remember all them as I was main pit bi**h for my crew of J, AXSH, DSH, ETC.... Had a great time. Ashley di well for her first AXSH with a good engine banging a couple starts on the fly on Sunday. Garret had some engine troubles Sunday but managed a second heat win. Patrick O'leary had some engine woes as well, but they are getting ironed out. He did great getting around the course.

Oh yeah, nice save little Tate in AXSH as a dual blow over looked to be happening, Brewster went up and over, and Tate got at least 50 degrees, and somehow luck brought it back down.

                  in summary-

The 50th year of boat racing at the American Legion Post #223 in Constantine, MI did not disappoint those hoping for a great turnout and tough fought battles on the race course. Despite high winds Saturday the race proceeded according to schedule, pleasing over 100 spectators in the bleachers. A few diehard fans were even in the stands Sunday under their umbrellas. 300 entries over the 2 days of racing made for many full fields.

The future looks even brighter as both AXH & AXR classes of the J category had elims along with ASR, ASH, and 20SSH in the SO classes. Few winners won both heats back to back - something you usually only see at the Nationals - that's tough competition.
Only a few buoys needed to be replaced and accidents were limited. The 2 scariest moments were Mark Pugh in his DMH getting pitched at full speed, and our own Ed Harrington and Tracy Johnston tangling in ASH. Thankfully, all were ok, but will be sore for a few days. However, it might be last time the Race Director and the Chief Scorer of a big Divisionals race are allowed to be on the water together at the same time.
Joey Z's display of sportsmanship in 25SSH was summarized at the Legion by Tom Kargus and was well do***ented on Hydroracer.net - this deserves recognition from everyone in the boatracing world. Thomas Allen managed to sink his one day old paint job on his JH - a dad's work is never done. And one new AX driver was bit by the new tuck rule... misinterpretation/measurement cost a good young racer a podium finish.
DMH attendance was light, but it was really nice to see Shawn Brill doing well in the pits after his head injuries suffered earlier this spring. Another MOD note: Jim Robb's FEH is the new kneeldown benchmark.

What do you get when you combine a Pater and a Tate... besides a Pa-Tate-r ?? Equipment combining for 6 Divisional Championships. Not too surprising if you know how hard these 2 teams work on their stuff.

UNofficial Divisional results - # of entries

Classes with 8+ entries, qualifying a spot in the big dance:

25SSR - Joe Pater, Tim Ross, Mike Marshall - 5
DSR - only 2 boats showed (lets get it together you 'up north' guys)

                  MOD results (Sat):
DMH - Jimmy Robb, Mark Pugh, Larry Gottschalk - 3
FEH - Rich Welch, Brian Palmquist, John Sharp - 5

Official results for both days of racing to be posted on MichiganHydroplane.com by the end of the week.

Competition was not limited to the race course. For the first time that I remember, an MHRA race was heavily supportted by photographers. New technology allows for some excellent on-the-spot photos and even custom clocks. Lets not forgot who has supported us the longest... thanks Leo.

                  Thank you to:
-Harringtons and Sidors for the pre-race arrangements
-Jared Ryske for the awards presentation slide show
-Karen and Joe Duffield for helping in inspection all day, both days
-Lou Howard for the thorough Divisional inspections
-Our strong H&H Rescue team for another great job
-Shannon Bowman for the furthest traveled award - not great results, but he had a great time...
-Dewald Propellers, TJ Engine work, Jim LeClair Clocks, and KAOS Kutz for their door prize donations (actually, just Dylan Justice and the Brewsters thank you after winning all 5 draws)

A special thank you to all the Legion workers that helped make this race happen, especially Joe Wetstone. And thank you to the many MHRA members that continue to make our club one of the best in the business.

                  Kevin Ladd
