  • MiniMost - no wood

I am wanting to build a cottage run about. The plans call for fir construction for the frames, chines, etc. However fir is not available to me. What would be a good substitute?

    The plans are available here

    Alternate Softwoods

I reccomend using Sitka Srpuce or Obeeche (sp) if you don't use fir. I heard fir is not the best to use so I have never tried it. Sitka is light and fairly strong, I have used it exclusivley on 14 boats. I am currently using Obeechee on my next project. Lighter than Sitka it seems, and just as strong. Of course weight depends on how well it was dried, and for how long. Fresh is always heavier, year old or more is very dry.

Okumee plywood is usually the standard for decks, bottoms, chines, etc.

    Hope this helps.

      Dave,

What's your source for Okoume plywood?

        Source

I normally would get it from Harbor, but they have been out of 3MM for so long I use my local source and use the 4mm.

I believe Darrel Sorenson sells it from his website as well, might be closer for the shipping costs than Harbor.
