What are legal motors for the A or J classes as far as dates these motors are manufactured. It shows for Mercury the motors produce in 1999 or later are legal. I don't know how to tell for Johnson or Evinrude. Thanks

Legal powerheads are 1986-1991. Complete legal motors are 1986-1988. The formula for determining the year uses the word "INTRODUCES" with I=1, N=2, T=3, R=4, O=5, D=6, U=7, C=8, E=9, S=0
For example a motor with the serial reading E15RCD
E stands for "Evinrude"
15 is for 15 horsepower
R stands for rope start
C=8, D=6 or 1986 year.
(This example is actually the most ideal A stock motor)
