  • Newberg needs your help

Many of you attended the 58th annual boat races at Newberg this weekend. Aside from being a pretty soggy day on Saturday, I think we could all agree that once again CORA and the Newberg Boat Club put on one hell of a fine show. I have been coming to Newberg for about 8 years now, and have been a member of CORA for the last 3. I have noticed in this time that the people that put on the race seem to be less inclined every year to fight the battle with the local authorities to put on the race. Since the county put in the new facilities a few years ago the parks department thinks that the park should stay open so people can launch their pleasure boats. Apparently a 58 year tradition has no impact on them, so I'm hoping letter writing will. If you would like to see this race continue please write a snail mail letter to the address at the top of this web page
    www.co.yamhill.or.us/parks/index.asp
Make it positive and to the point, thanking them for helping us continue the tradition. Also we may want to spread them out a little, so perhaps some can wait a week or 2. You can also thank the folks at the Oregon Marine Board, they are the ones that keep telling the folks at Cullaby they can't kick us out. Their address is listed at the bottom of this page
www.boatoregon.com/ Lets let them know we care, lord knows the people that don't like us will and do. Thanks, Tony

    Newberg

    Tony-

Thanks for posting this, it is hard to put into words what Newberg means to some of us. Our family is from Eugene, and Newberg was one of the few races that we could go to in Oregon. I grew up in boats and around boat racing and my earliest memories include Newberg. Going back to the early 60's here.

Our family has old 8mm videos that include the Newberg races. All of us kids would play up on a huge sawdust pile by the mill and run around in the pits. It always seemed to be really hot, and you would hear the Indy 500 on the radio. And of course the boat racing.......

A couple years ago I was in Oregon and made a point to drive through Newberg and found my way to the race site, it had changed a lot, but the memories were still there. It would be a shame if the historic event were to end.

I am not that far from retirement and plan to spend some time at the races again and I sure hope Newberg will be one of them.

Newberg is special to us too

Newberg was the first race we attended as participants. I remember how scared Mike was, and how we had to coax him into the boat. I also remember him in that J Stock bouncing all over the river, not knowing any better. I also remember looking up at the stands this year and being amazed that there were spectators there in weather I didn't even want to be in. Remember to write those letters so the organizers won't have to jump through as many hoops (we hope). Tony

          Yukon 800

          Dean-

The Yukon 800 will be June 24th and 25th. The clubs website also shows the other races in the schedule, including the Tanana 440 (yep 440 miles). I am just a bench racer and volunteer. It is a lot cheaper than racing I found out, and almost as much fun. www.yukon800.com

I also have a webshots page at http://community.webshots.com/user/arcticracer

Some pics of the boats etc. from last year.

What are the dates of the Stock Nationals next year? I am hoping to come my Dad also is planning on being there.

Government bureaucrats probably don't care about a racing tradition at Newberg, but the sportswriter or editor at the local newspaper might. Most towns of that size also have an historical society . . . .
