  • Burlington Fuel

    To All,

Chief Inspector Karl Stoll has announced that you need to bring GOOD FUEL to the Burlington event. The Milwaukee area including Racine and Burlington all have reformulated gas and most likely will not meet the fuel rules for SO/MO/J classes which will be enforced. There will be NO FUEL OF THE DAY!

    So bring good gas!

    Fuel?????

Ok fill me in here I am new to SO racing. What is "reformulated" fuel? I live in a metro area and I am guessing that "reformulated" fuel has 10% ethanol in it? What do I look for in fuel so It will pass?

Should be marked on pump if it contains any ethanol. Get away from metropolis areas & fuel should be non reformulated. Octane choice is up to you. If you come thru Delavan or Elkhorn Wi. on your way to Burlington, the gas is good there. Some outlying stations still might have reformulated gas though, so it's up to you to LOOK AT THE PUMP BEFORE YOU FILL!!!!
Once you get west of Burlington, most stations are straight gas.

Yes it would be nice if all stations posted it on the pump, but they don't.

Our local Marithon always had legal fuel until last summer. I checked it with my Digitron before a race. Shazam! out of limits, +30. No sticker on pump.

Mr. Schinskie (sp) a racer out of the Detroit metro area had been buying fuel for years at his favorite gas station. His son was DQ'd at Burlington, a 7hr. drive for them, because their fuel was illegal. He went back mad as H*ll to the stations owner and he told him most all metro Detroit fuel was reformulated gas now.

The only gas I have found still very legal on our side of the state, SW Michigan, is BP stations and Ammico. I still test our fuel every time I buy fuel and always have it checked at inspection prior to racing just to be safe.

            Non-reformulated Fuel

Ck w/your local community airport about 100 octane low-lead (AvGas). I live east of Burlington in the middle of the reformulated fuel country & the airport is the only place I can find good fuel.......

Seems to me that with all the bad gasoline on the market which is sold to the public, maybe the rules should be changed so any pump gas can be used. There is really no way anyone can be certain what you are buying anymore. At a National event, fuel should be supplied for a given price approved by who ever. ...Bob N-96

                    Junk!!!!

Even up here in the snow belt they are going with at least 10%. We were told it is going state wide. Probably BULL--___T but trying to quiet down pissed off people.

                      Fuel Rule

Refer to page 16, Rule 18-Fuel, of the APBA 2005 rule book. It gives detailed standards on fuel and the inspectors choices on Fuel of the day. Fuel of the day will not apply at National events.

                          Fuel and racing

I know this subject has been descused a number of times on this site before. I know it is one of the top issues with the technical committee of APBA. Jeff Titus, Ed Runne and many others have had experts come in and disscuse it at the national meeting. Untill a new standard for fuel being raced is put in the rule books we need to take it upon ourselves as racers to have our fuel tested and monitor the watering holes were we buy it. Back when I was a technical inspector in the OPC catigory I wittnessed to many racers being DQ'd on fuel. This was back in the 1980's when all we had to do was worry about 10% alcohol being added. Now with the oxigenated fuels its even worse. Case in point. I wittnessed one racer last year go from running at the front of the pack to being dead last. Both his Mercury motors were the same. He lost almost 800 rpm on both motors. He later found out it was the LEGAL fuel he was using. With todays gas prices, travel expences and entry fees, its a bumer this fuel can take you from running in the top 3 to finishing last. If the race clubs could do a spot check of fuels in the area prior to holding a race and report back to the racers eather thru this site or putting it on the race circular I think it may help. An example is this post for the winternationals held https://hydroracer.net/forums/showthr...highlight=Fuel Just continue doing this for the local races as well. If everyone runs a fuel of the day as far as spec fuel it will help those racers out that cannot get decent fuel in their area. Many of the OPC races I went to had a fuel truck at the race site for fuel if needed. They like the local advertising of their fuel being used at the races. I think our Nationals need one of these trucks on site to help make an even playing field for us. It sounds like Steve may have this in mind for Wakefield. Run the oil you like so much but lets get a set standard for gas at our local race sites. Lets race apples against apples. If you know were to still purchase legal fuel in your race site area, post it here so people can go there. Bottom line, people don't need to be DQ'd for illegal fuel if we all help monitor it's use at the particular race site as a fuel of the day. I'm done venting.

                            Everybodys gas

One scheme used by gokart racers in the stock classes is everyone brings as much gas as they need and it is all dumped into a common barrel, mixed and redistributed in the original qualities given .... everyone races with the same gas. This would work for Stock where the motors were built to run on pump gas, but not in some Mod classes where motors can be heavily modified and require racing gas
                            Sam
This is used for the 4cyl. briggs classes were fuel is straight gas, not pre mix Yamaha shifter kart classes.I don't think the two stoke guys would take kindly to this approach because everyone typicly runs their oil/gas ratios where they prefer it. The gas station in our area are franchised station that usally get their fuel from the same depot. Are you saying the station uses different distributors or the distributors are getting different batches of fuel delivered from the refineries. The stations in my area have been eather legal or not legal depending on the name brand of station. I know what your saying about not always getting the same reading, I'm just saying lets have everyone run the same fuel at a race site for that race, whether it's legal on the Digitron or not. The playing field needs to be level. Not arguing with you here just making an observation. I don't know if there is a clearcut answer because there are so many varibals.

                              how do they do that?

What testing methods do the Kart guy's use? Perhaps a rule change might be in order if they have a better method. Brian Julien might know.
