Janet I had gotten two of the APBA tee shirts out of Sundays entry and told Denis to donate the other 40.00 to the club so its just 35.00 for ASH. Just hang on to it and will use it at Sharpstown. I had more then 40.00 worth of fun. Just the cookout Sat night with Matt, Gary, Travis and the rest of the crew is like dinner and a floor show, priceless

A splash of excitement

They came from all over, some driving all night, pulling sleek hydro-planes and runabouts to race on Buckhorn Reservoir.


Many of the enthusiasts were disappointed Saturday when winds a nd rain kept them off the water and in the pits working on their boats and just visiting one another.

The event was the American Power Boat Association's Southeast Divisional Championships.

Mark Ritchie and his son Austin traveled from Chesapeake Beach, Md., pulling behind a Winnebago a trailer filled with boats, tools, and equipment.

Ritchie raced hydro-planes when he was a teenager in the 1970s and just started back about two years ago. This was his 14-year-old son's first year, racing his sleek boat called "Cereal killer."


"I do it for the thrills, and it's kind of scary," Austin said.

The junior races can hit speeds up to 50 mph.

"Winning is not the sole reason we do this sport," his father said. "Many people would be disappointed if it was."

Ritchie has never won a major competition in 40 years, but that doesn't bother him. He said he enjoys the experience.

"There is something about it that doesn't leave you," he said.

At the end of the parking lot near the water, Matt D'Agostino, was working on his boat and his daughter's boat. His daughter Valerie, 17, just won the Winter Nationals in Louisiana in March and set a world competition record time.

Championships are nothing new to the D'Agostinos from Bowie, Md. Her father has won 10 national championships and four world championships. His son has won two national titles.

"My stepfather got me into it when I was 12," D'Agostino said.

That is the way it is with most of the racers, many of whom were at Buckhorn with family.

Greg Lyons of Furlong, Pa., a third-generation racer, was in his trailer working on one of his three outboard motors.

"This is a hand-me-down sport," Lyons said. "Our Kevlar outfits and a lot of the equipment are passed down from uncles and fathers."

Lyons left Pennsylvania at midnight Friday with his four boats and drove all night to make the race.

"You do whatever it takes," he said.

Most of the racers have day jobs and spend a lot of time on the road during the weekends, traveling to lakes from Maryland to Florida. Lyons' friend, Darren Gallagher, drove down from Rumson, N.J., pulling two boats.

This is the first time the hydro-plane racers have been to Wilson and all of them seemed to enjoy it.

Not far away, Jesse Swain and his friends were working on their boats on wooden stands and joking as waves of dark clouds rolled in from the southwest.

Swain drove 15 hours from Saracus, Ind., to be at the races. His friends drove more than 20 hours from Wisconsin.

"This is just the game we play and we all love it," Swain said as he worked on the motor of his boat. "We do it for the friendship and the speed."

Dennis Burke, one of the race directors, said it costs about $5,000 to put on a race. After they found Buckhorn Reservoir a couple of years ago, it seemed the perfect spot, halfway between New York and Florida, he said.

"It is a complicated process," Burke said. "It was all going swimmingly until ..."

He looked at the dark sky with his hands out.

The races did get under way Sunday.



Wilson was a great place, thank you to Dennis, who worked VERY hard to put this race on, Janet Stoy, Dave Augustine, Jill Glossner, Kristi Ellison..all who worked on the Judge's Stand ALL day Sunday, Scott Glossner on the PA, Lou Lommasson (sp?) for Inspection, and EVERYONE who traveled from both far away (some who didn't get to race) and close by. Nice pits, GOOD Pig Pickin', hospitable locals, and I would LOVE to see a race in Wilson again..and so would the people in Wilson!

On Any Given Sunday

On Any Given Sunday

After driving a CSR for the past year two seasons, Sunday at Wilson was my first outing in a CSH. It was my first ride in a hydroplane in 30 years, 3 months and oh, about 9 days.

And even though I drove it like a little old lady in the nearly white-cap conditions, I still placed higher than 10 time national champion and four time world champion Matt D'Agostino.

Sometimes you just gotta laugh.

Matt, I hope you have a good sense of humor!
