  • 2-way radio question

Are 2-way radios legal in SO? I just found out that there is a earbud and voice activated mic for the small hand held Motorola radios that you can get at all the sporting goods stores. They don't cost much either. If it is legal to use them it would be a good cheap way to go.

    They were last I checked.

Use one with a PTT button is my experiance... even my ASH will turn on the mic if it is a VOX unit on my Motorolla FRS radio then you can't hear them talking.

I've never needed to talk back though, I just get them to yell out the flags and if there is an accident or dead boat somewhere. Any time I end up in the drink it hasn't worked to say "I'm ok" I need better water proofing

You can get some nice helmet units for about $50 that are used for motorcycling.

      radios

Racing rule 1.8 on page 9 in 2006 rule book.

"In MO, PRO, SO classes drivers may utilize radio communication. AXSR, AXSH, JR, JH drivers may not utilize radio communication with the following exception: "New" drivers in these classes (see Rule 1 for definition of "new") may utilize radio communication at non-championship and non-record races."

J classes remind me of Little League sports where parents are over the top involved. hen my noy played LL baseball a few parents were so obnoxious the league played the playoff games sans spectators! At bo9at races we often chuckled when we spied a J parent screaming instructions from the pits. All that yelling for naught - kid can't hear ya! Radios in J boats would enable that yelled communication - enough to ruin a J driver's day.

I have used FRS radios in Mod. Since there is no ignition shielding and resistor spark plugs aren't used there is a lot of motor static.

I have always been able to understand a simplified clock count down and heard about course obstructions before I was facing them and about red/black flags going up - I don't use the radio for any thing else

Your motor may make less ignition noise than mine

I have been able to clip the PTT button inside my helmet where I could push it with my chin to activate the mic
