Dillon picked to host North American, National Outboard boat racing events

    Staff Report

ZANESVILLE - Recently at the American Power Boats Association's (APBA) annual meeting, the Stock and Modified Outboard Racing Commissions awarded the 2006 North American Championships to Dillon Lake.

The hosting club will be the Indiana Outboard Association. The races will be held on July 8-9 at the Dillon Lake State Park beach area. This will be the fourth consecutive year that APBA Stock and Modified Outboard racing has been held at this premier racing venue, and it will be the first time that a national level competition has been held there.

Dillon Lake has become a hotbed of outboard racing in recent years. It is a circuit favorite among outboard racing's finest competitors because of the protected waters, the wide flat beach that is used for the pit area, and the amenities offered by the Dillon Lake State Park. Local park officials have been enthusiastic supporters of outboard racing and are looking forward to hosting about 200 competitors.

At the same meeting, APBA officials picked Zanesville to host the 2007 Modified Outboard National Championships. This is the organization's premier Modified racing event of the season and draws racers and spectators from all over the nation.

Paired with the Stock Outboard North American Championships at the same site will make this the largest outboard racing competition in the entire country next year. Over 300 competitors from all over the nation will converge on Dillon Lake for four days of heated racing. Some classes of these relatively small outboard hydroplanes will reach speeds of nearly 100 mph.

"Zanesville can be proud of our beautiful lake and Dillon State Park," said Mike Marshall of Dresden, a longtime boat racer and pilot who worked to get the races here. "It is a resource of tremendous value to our community, and is about to be appreciated by folks all across the country.

"A special thanks should go the Mark West, the Dillon Lake State Park Manager, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for working together to make Dillon Lake available for these races," he added.
