  • Question about APBA boat numbers?

If the boat in this picture puts a square white background with black numbers where the X is now, will it be APBA legal?

        Numbers

David, Numbers must be a minimum of 6 inches in height and 1 inch stroke where space permits and shall be black on white or white on black. The background must be solid. There shall be at least one inch background border around each number and letter, where space permits. There shall be a minimum of one inch spacing between each number and letter, where space permits. I've taken this from the 2006 Rule Book. Hope this helps! Jack

              David,

Not meaning to stir the pot, under rule #6 Racing Numbers, section 4 states that " It shall be the driver's responsibilityto make the numbers legible. The numbers must be so displayed as to be clearly visible at all times, and shall be securely attached in such a manner they will not be lost or defaced during a race. The race committee shall have the power to warn, or disqualify without previous notice, any driver who races with improper or illegible numbers."

The issue is really can the scorers see your numbers to be able to score you. If the scorers can't see your number to score you, you loose. You might want to consider vertical plackards like they run in Europe.

                Dan,

We talked about trying to attach "number boards", but there really isn't a safe place to do so. Could cause problems with steering cables.

                  Numbers

David, the APBA minimum is six inch numbers but the NBRA size has been increased to eight inches so I recommend you make your new numbers eight inches. In some case the additional 2 inches in size may make it tough to comply with the space required above and below the number but APBA has some wiggle room when they say "when space permits".
