  • Helmet ?

Help! I have looked all over the APBA site and I can not find what makes a legal helmet. I am starting out this year and need to get one. I have paid my dues to APBA but have not got the rule books yet. Do I need to buy a special Bell or Simpson racing one from Lifeline? Or can I get one from the local cycle shop and paint it? What Snell or DOT #'s are needed?

    Thanks'

The rule is a bit vague. It states Snell or DOT approved, but does not give a year of snell approval.

You can buy either an orange helmet from Lifeline, or you can paint one from you local bike shop.

I just bought a new Shoei for my daughter. They no longer sell an orange helmet, but they do sell a yellow one. In the rules, it says yellow is a legal color. I found it on Helmetcity.com.

Security also has a very nice, and light, helmet (full face and open face) that also comes in orange. It is a Kevlar and carbon fiber construction.

        Paint ??

Read the Mfg's instructions , or ask the vendor, before painting any helmet.
Materials used in the shell of certain helmets may react with some paints, and weaken the outer shell.

The APBA Snell spec is 75, so I doubt you can find on in decent shape that is too old

The Snell 75 is a legal standard in racing, not the ideal.

Older Snell automotive specs didn't require water, heat or solvent tests like the older motorcycle spec and current SA spec

As is pointed out in the current Grapefruit Gazette, fit is important for function. The helmet should fit pretty snug; if you helmet fits loose enough to wear for an hour it is too loose.

              helme

I have been told it does not matter if your helmet is snell or Dot approved, as long as you feel safe with the helmet you have.

If you are saying you have a choice between Snell or DOT you are correct. Other choices are Peltor and some MIL spec aircraft helmets; but it must be one from the list, it isn't 100% up to the driver.

                    Snell Helmets

Be sure to check out the www.fralickboats.com site for racing orange Snell 2000 helmets. Also many others, open face DOT orange as well. These helmets are not expensive, and great quaulity. Colored visors and Fog City antifog inserts also at amazing prices. I've sold hundreds to boat racers all over. Prices are slightly more that stated on the web site, still great values.
