  • Question on scoring

Quick question on scoring: If a driver places 1st in his 1st heat and 5th in the 2nd heat, what is his overall final position for the race? How is this figured? Is there a mathematical formula?

What if in the same race someone finishes 2nd in the first heat and 4th in the second heat, how does affect his position compared to the first guy above?

dane, it depends how everyone else finishes. in your example driver a gets 400 points for first and 127 for fifth for a total of 527 points. driver b gets 300 points for second and 169 for forth for 469 points. driver a will finish ahead of driver b, but as for overall you need the other finishes. you can fo to the apba website and go to resources and find general rules. go down a bunch of pages and find the listing of finishing points.

have a good off season. merry Christmas and a happy new year.

Actually, already did that. I start my training as a scorer this coming season. My question, though wasn't really in respect to that. I'm taking college online and right now I'm in a database class. I was thinking of creating a database based race scoring app for my class assignment and was curious how my scenario above played out. In other words, I need to be able to model the scoring mathematically.

Ram4x4 - I have done that already in a product called Qlik - but being fed through excel - could just as easily be a database if you wanted. If that is the type of assignment you are working on, let me know. I might be able to make it easier for you

      Yeah, that would be cool.

    It starts with 1st being 400 points the each position after is 75 % rounded up. So it is 400, 300, 225, 169, 127, 95, 72, 54, 40, 30, 23,17.

positions are worked out on point, then tie brake based on time.
you can do it all in excel or code it access. things to consider are plentiful and that is where the coding get difficult.
registration of drivers/classes/name changes at drivers meeting/class combining at low entry levels(scoring separately)
      Setup of Elimination heats/final
Disqualification on the race course/start/driving infractions/Crash, restart of heat, DNS/DNF,
Disqualification in inspection, tie braking for points/both before inspection and after inspection results.

Mia did a good sheet years and years ago, i'm sure it has improved since i've seen it. I took that and re did it from the ground up a number of years ago to make it more user friendly and handle much of the work with a click here and have prints auto generated after heats to be posted, etc, but there was a load of talk of changing the point system in APBA so i put it back to the back burner for a while and haven't got back to finishing it as the group i race with is old school paper scoring.

There is certainly lots of room for improvement, and if you are into databases and excel type work, it is actually alot of fun to go through the process. just remember, build it big enough for other clubs, think handle a nationals and how classes flow through that. I actually had basic Driver Profiles in the back ground, simple print off and an announcer based on the registrations for the day. I didn't get there yet, but i also has plans of recording driver infraction DQ and Inspection DQ's. how good is that info for a race committee after a couple years or an announcer that can read a novel of detail on a driver and know that they have a habit of jumping the gun, or finishing under weight.
