  • John Read

It is with extreme shock and sadness that I have to let you all know that John Read, former Mod Chairman, passed away Sunday 12/18/05. He had been battling an illness for quite a few months. I have little info on details at this time and quite honestly, this is very hard to get the word out.

Update: John passed away Sunday, 12/18/05 at 6:00pm at the hospital. I'm told that services will be held in the Toldeo, Ohio area on Wednesday & the funeral in Schenectedy, NY Friday. Times are listed in Dave Mason's post below.

John was a good friend, always there to help out, no matter what. I had worked with him the past few years while he was Treasurer for Three Rivers.

My deepest sympathy goes out to his wonderful wife Liz and Daughter Emma. I know John cherished you both.

    I'll miss ya buddy,
    Jerry Brewster

John Read was a true friend to boatracing and all racers. From his time as Mod Chairman, to his run as TRORA Treasurer, John was always there for whatever any racer or the sport might want or need. John wore his love for the sport and for all racers on his sleve and was always there when needed. Wither it be some first aid, a place to sleep for the night or a little beach racing, if John had it, he would offer it. The world of racing is much poorer today with his loss. We will all miss him.

Our heartfelt condolences to Liz & Emma and the entire Read Family.

Mr. Reed has been a fine gentleman to work with. I knew he was ill, but this message is somewhat of a surprise. I am sure Mod racing will feel the loss of a friend and leader. Our heart felt sympathy to John’s friends and family.

I had no idea that John had been ill. This is an unbelieveable shock to me.

I was fortunate enough to serve with John for a couple years on both the Stock and Mod Commissions. He was a great guy to work with, and his passion for our sport was amazing. This is really tragic.

My thoughts and prayers are with Liz and Emma.

                  Snapshot of John

For those who knew John well, his generosity was evident.

For others...here's an example of what a good guy he was.

On the way home from Wakefield in 2000, Jerry Brewster and I needed a place to stay. John told us to stop at his place. We arrive around midnight and not only do we have a bed to sleep in, but John has two steak dinners, hot off the grill, waiting for us.

I'll never forget that...nor all his other contributions to the racing community.

                  Rest in Peace.

                  Dana

                    Sad day

This is such a shock.....I am not sure what to say, I am stunned.

As many have said, John truly loved the sport and served for a long time to give something back to it. It is a sad day for outboard racing to lose someone who did so much.

It is a sad day for myself as well.....John was one of the TRORA regulars that I would see every year and end up having a beer with! This year at Franklin the first beer will be for him. I think he would of appreciated that....

                    Sadly,
                    Dean

John was one of the best, that is all I can say. Below are some details of the service.

I spent many days and nights with John, both on and off the race course. A true competitor in both areas, and a nicer man you will not meet. I will miss him dearly. I only wish we could have made that fishing trip this spring on his newly powered boat he kept telling me about. John, my friend, you are forever remembered in my heart, and I will never forget your love of the sport of boat racing, and your respect you show for all people. You were the one who could find the good in anyone.

For Liz and Emma, and all the family, his legacy is forever etched.

One thing I will always remember is a story John always told each year. He was pushing his DSH back to his pits at Dayton one year after shearing a pin his rookie year. He thought he was done for the day since he was only half way to his pits. I knew that DSH had one more heat to go but it was up next. I ran down the shoreline not knowing who he was and asked what was wrong. My brother Jon and I threw his boat on some stands, filled it with gas & gave him another shear pin. John went out there, raced and really enjoyed himself.

The reason I remember this so well is that John never let my brother and I forget how much that meant to him. To me, I'm just glad I went down to meet this guy who my friends and I had such a good time with at so many race sites, banquets, and region meetings. I'll always remember his generosity and kindness he showed to others, even when things got tough.

Here is a link from the funeral home: http://www.legacy.com/Obituaries.asp...sonId=16049007

My brother Jon, myself and our family will be there tomorrow night. I hope some of you can make it for the viewing.

Dave and I are so sorry to hear of John's death. Although we knew he was ill, we did not realize it was as serious as this. Does anyone have an address for Liz so that I can send her a note? Contact me at

                              Sadly missed

I also, did not realize John was so ill. He was always very nice and helpful to me, although he didn't know me very well. My best memory of John was the race in Ravenswood, WVa. about 3-4 years ago. I was blown away at his way-cool trailer and the way he had it rigged out. We hung out with him and a couple of drivers most of the night and caught the fireworks show across the river as well.

He will be missed, and reading all these posts again makes me realize how close-knit we are, even if we just met!

                              Godspeed, John.
