TO DRILL OR NOT TO DRILL................SORC UPDATE

The BOD is planning a meeting on February 16th. I believe that is when rules passed by the commissions will be voted on by the Board. I have contacted Jeff Brewster for clarification and I'm sure the SORC will convene if necessary to make sure this is done.

It sounds like the drilling is not so easy and straight forward. Furthermore, it is irreversible and creates a roadblock for 300SS wanting to race in 20SSH and/or CSH. Please SORC provide clarification and recommendations so racers can do this without ruining our tower housings. Also, if fellow racers could provide a list of competent machinists knowledgeable of what will work best that we can send our towers to and pay to do the work so we are assured it is done correctly would be appreciated.

For those who are going to bore out the hole with a drill, I'd think twice. If for no other reason, you want to increase the hole size to the bottom of the existing hole using a mill to lower the pick-up hole as much as possible. I'm glad my 302's pump at 3/4" in CSH and I'm glad I no longer race 20SSH.Joe Silvestri

Joe...........after the meeting TJ had a 'drill guide plate' and gave a quick lesson on how to do it to a few of us. He made it look easy but then again TJ is a machinist. He said he is working on a instruction guide to help people do it. But i sorta agree with you, you may want someone who has some skill or experience doing it to help you. If you screw it up your tower is history as the copper tube is cast into the housing. At the end of the day if done properly initial testing showed it helped cool....the SORC has that data and perhaps you could get it from your Commissioner to study it yourself.

Hmmm, can't seem to find the measurement of where the water inlet hole needs to be. I recall the location being measured at a race last year or the year before and having a +/- of quite a bit (maybe .125"?), but my memory may not serve me correctly in this occasion.
A link would be helpful if you're in the know.
Thanks, John.

I certainly don't have that answer for you John but on the other subject of the 300 motors we should get the definitive answer tonight from Chairman Brewster as he goes to his recording from the meeting. His recall is the same as mine that the motion referred to all Yamato's. Confirmation soon.

Just got the word from the Chairman. The drilling and chamfering is legal on ALL Yamato's. For those of you with Yamato 80's, there are two holes in the tower, if I remember correctly. You may not want to drill out the upper hole, I think it has something to do with water pressure in the unit. Check with TJ or some other motorhead before you start hogging out your motor!

Where will be rule be posted.? Will jeff post it here so the Folks in NBRA can adjust our motors to be compatible with APBA. Cross over members and sell of motors are happening, so we need to be the same. There is consern about the placement of the hole, will there be any measurements reguarding the location.?
