I use Eastern White Cedar, it has a oil in it that makes it extreamly rot resistant. Very hard to find clear wood with straight grain. The mi) i use saves his clear and gets $2.00 BDF
A long time ago my local lumberyard, when they got in an order of No. 2 Spruce, would let me sort through it for pieces of clear Spruce. But what with Lowes, Home Depot, Menards and the like it is hard to find a good family owned local lumberyard anymore.
