Has anyone tried to use a gps watch for testing purposes? I'm trying to figure out if there is one that records top speed.

I have one, it works. Garmin foretrex. I nearly lost it a couple of times as the strap attachment isn't strong enough so I ended up wrapping clear packing tape around it and my wrist. Now I have thrown the strap away and velcro it to the boat. I like the Garmin etrex better

What speed features does it have, average or max, etc?

That is a 301 I have an older 101. It has the same features as the Etrex, just a smaller screen, average speed, top speed, distance plus all the stuff we don't need like waypoints, altitude, etc. The strap on the 301 looks to be the same as the 101 and it just isn't strong enough where the strap sttaches and when I would come in one side or the other would have come loose and it would be flopping around on my wrist. That is why I threw the strap away and put Velcro on the back of it.
