Camera on the helmet was the best. But since somebody thought that wasn't safe, on top of the motor works pretty good.
For little closed course races, it works fine. But for Top O', you gotta make sure that mount is tight! I tightened mine to the edge of the breaking point. Once I entered Mullet lake, the jolting moved the camera to point toward the sky.

I agree.. The helmet is by far the best. But if racing APBA events, it's not legal to have on your helmet. Personally have not tried other places. I stick to the helmet. Might try it elevated above the dash of the boat some day.
I have tried several locations. Mounted on Engine, was the best as mentioned. Mounted on left side of the hydro, mounted on center of hydro above windshield, and mounted on center, looking back at driver so I can critique what I did wrong. If you mount on engine, make sure you have a good and clean connection, and have a safety strap on the camera. Somewhere in Three Rivers is a go pro with footage on it, I left the pits with the camera, and came back without it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0BO6Qq2oQM
When it comes to boat racing and the wife, it's easier to ask for forgiveness than it is permission, and of course I spent a number of nights sleeping on the couch!
I borrowed a coworker's GoPro for a weekend and I mounted it inside the windscreen on my 200MH. I had it pointing forward for 3 heats and back, toward me, for one. Having it inside the windscreen protected it and kept it from getting knocked back by another boat's roostertail.
